1 Frontal associational cortex
Domina Petric, MD

2 Frontal associational cortex
It is also called PREFRONTAL CORTEX: cortex that is anterior to the motor cortex, anterior two thirds of the superior, middle and inferior frontal gyri. Dorsolateral prefrontal cortex: executive functions (planning) and working memory. Prefrontal associational cortex develops very slow: development is finished in adult age (at about 25 years).

3 Frontal associational cortex
Medial orbital prefrontal cortex: implicit informations derived from our emotions. Medial orbital prefrontal cortex is engaged in processing emotions. Medial orbital prefrontal cortex also supresses the impulses that might lead to the wrong short term behavior (impulsive, socially not acceptable behavior). Amygdala is connected with this part of prefrontal cortex.

4 Emotions are very important in decision making process.

5 Prefrontal cortex

6 Wisconsin card sort test: people with prefrontal cortex lesion can not change from sorting by color to sorting by number, for example. They tend to have perseverational behavior.

7 Planning and strategies
Dorsomedial prefrontal cortex detects when the actor´s strategy becomes unreliable and triggers the creation of new strategies. Ventral striatum detects when newly created strategies become reliable and confirms those strategies. Dorsolateral prefrontal cortex detects when one alternative strategy becomes reliable and rejects newly created strategies.
