Jesus is contrasting himself with nation of Israel (Ps. 80:8-16; Is. 5:1-7) Jesus is saying that the true people of God are now those connected to me

3 The Vine The Gardener (vs 2,3) God the Father is the gardener
The gardener cares for and tends for the vineyard. Works to see as much fruit produced as possible Cuts off branches that don’t bear fruit. Prunes branches that do bear fruit

What does it mean that God cuts off branches? Doesn’t mean that Christians can lose their salvation (John 10:28,29 Refers to those that have the appearance of Christians but are not truly regenerate Ex. Judas & Disciples that left Jesus (John 6:66)

The sometimes painful process of becoming like Jesus 2 main pruning shears are the Word of God and Trials (James 1) The result of pruning is the branches produce even more fruit

Staying in one place. Remaining connected to Jesus Attitude of humility and dependence Constant communication through prayer & scripture Connected to the Body of Christ/Church

A lifestyle that is connected to and cultivating a dependence upon Jesus

9 The Vine The Branches (vs 4,5) What is the fruit? (vs 8-11)
Fruit of the Spirit Life that brings glory to God Obedience Experience the depth of God’s love Joy of Christ

The abundant, to the full, eternal life
