Goals for 2016 Goal #1 - Develop standards and framework models for emerging technologies and cross disciplinary sciences Goal #2 – Create a standards education portfolio and be the leading society in the delivery of standards-related professional education Goal #3 – Make Computer Society standards the most used standards in industry and government Portfolio Review – Review a third of the standards under development and/or published by the Computer Society

Goal #1 – New Standards Ethics for Systems Development from S2ESC
PAR Model-Based Ethics (John Havens) possible co-sponsor: Society for the Social Implications of Technology DevOps processes (Bob Aiello) from S2ESC 3-D Printing possible new Standards Committee Matt Ceglia has been exploring related to medical 3-D printing standard possible co-sponsor: America Makes

Goal #2 – Standards Education
Nothing substantive to report Standards University IEEE New Initiatives (James Irvine, Yatin Trivedi) EAB and SA joint committee on Standards Education (David Law) GlobalSpec as a potential partner for standards education
8
Goal #3 – Most Used Standards
Nothing substantive to report GlobalSpec as a potential partner for advocating standards usage
9
Portfolio Review In a sense, all Computer Society standards undergo regular review Portfolio Review inspired essentially 100% review IEEE CS standards must be revised or re-approved every ten years ISO/IEC standards every five years currently expect 14 standards to quietly expire because of little use or interest PARs expire after four years Vitality Committee reviews Standards Committees
10
Review of Standards Committees
Standards Committees that may be retired Foundation for Intelligent Physical Agents Voting Systems some work being done in public working groups because of a demand by the elections community that the standards be totally unencumbered with copyright restrictions on drafts, approved standards, and derivative works IEEE may be creating a new policy that would satisfy the elections community IEEE would be logical choice for international standardization
11
Standards Committee that may be re-focused and re-vitalized
Information Assurance Cybersecurity and Privacy Standards Committee that may be “re- distributed” Storage Systems Microprocessor if unable to find a Sponsor Chair
12
New Standards Association Posture
Standards Association withdrew from the US National Committee of the IEC, declined the JTC1 Secretariat, is withdrawing from US TAG sponsorship concern is SA is global standards development organization; some view it as inappropriate to support US national entities (perception of SA as US SDO) only the US handles standards development through voluntary industry organizations looking for new sponsors for US TAGs CS ExCom is concerned about the impact on our standards work and would like the SAB to recommend a position for BOG consideration
13
US TAG Sponsorship Who will take over sponsorship for US TAGs?
includes ISO/IEC JTC1/SC7, SC27, SC38, SC40 are there any other TAGs or TAG-equivalents to address? candidates suggested include the Computer Society, the Standards Activities Board, IEEE-USA, ANSI, ACM, SEI, INCITS, ISTO, INCOSE, ITSMF-USA, … How much does it cost to sponsor a TAG? fees to ANSI, travel expenses for TAG chair Possible unintended consequences divergence of IEEE and international standards IEEE disengagement with international standards dev disengagement of US industry and SMEs
