Film Studies GCSE Breakdown
The Controlled Assessments What the pupils are currently working on: CA1 Exploration. An analysis of a segment from a chosen film ( words) and an exploration of the production, distribution and exhibition of the same chosen film ( words). (15%) What they’ll be working on after Christmas: CA2 Production. One production piece made up of 4 tasks – a pitch (approximately 150 words), a preproduction (photographed storyboard), a production (poster campaign/film) and a final evaluative analysis ( words). (35%)

What can you do to help? Our role The pupils will currently be working on their segment of film. They have all chosen the film they are working on but not necessarily the particular segment of film they are looking at. In the next few weeks they will be researching the industry background of their film at home and at school. In the lead up to Christmas they will need to be revising and taking notes on their segment of film at home in order to prepare for writing about it at school. Ask them, which film have they chosen, which segment, what are they focusing on in that segment. These are questions they should be able to answer over the next few weeks.

Research and Homework Ongoing Challenges I’ve provided every student in Film Studies with a list of approved YouTube Channels. This is ongoing homework. They should be watching videos from these channels on a regular basis. Each student has a copy of the GCSE film challenge (you can have one too). Do you watch films with the students? Do you discuss films? Could you watch their segment of film with them?

Post Christmas The Production After Christmas we aim to complete the CA2 section of the course. This will involve photographing a story board and having a cohesive idea for a film. Help achieving striking photographs is always appreciated. The students will have to be able to explain this idea to us and, hopefully, to you in a clear and cogent manner. If they can then they’ll have demonstrated the necessary abilities to secure a strong performance.
