Algebra I 2nd Nine Weeks Vocabulary Review Coach Whitlock

Absolute Value The positive expression of the distance of a value

Algebraic Expression A collection of numbers, variable, operations, and grouping symbols

Best Fit Line A line that passes close to most of the data points on a scatter plot

Coordinate Plane A plane formed by two real number lines intersecting at a right angle

Data The facts, or numbers, that describe something

Equation A statement formed when an equality symbol (=) is placed between two equal expressions

Equivalent Equations Equations that have the same solution(s)

Equivalent Expressions
Two expressions that have the same value for all values of the variable

Evaluating Substituting a number into a variable and solving the mathematical expression

Function A rule that represents the relationship between the input and output in a table

Inequality An open sentence formed when an inequality symbol is placed between two expressions

Integers The set of numbers that includes positives, negatives, and zero

Inverse Operations Two operations that “undo” each other

Like Terms Terms in which the variable factors are the same

Literal Equation An equation that uses more than one letter as a variable

Negative Numbers Numbers represented by the points to the left of the origin on the real number line

Numeric Pattern A sequence of numbers that follow the same rule

Opposites Two points on the real number line that are the same distance from the origin, but on opposite sides of the origin

Quadrants In the coordinate plane, one of the four parts into which the axes divide the plane

Rate Compares two quantities measured in different units

Real Numbers The set of numbers that includes all positives, negatives, and zero

Scatter plot The plot, or graph, of the points that correspond to the ordered pairs in a collection

Slope The number of units the line rises or falls for each unit of horizontal change from left to right

Slope-Intercept form The linear equation when m is the slope and b is the y-intercept Y = mx + b

Variable A letter that is used to represent one or more numbers

Whole Numbers The set of numbers {1,2,3,4,5,….}

X-axis The horizontal axis in the coordinate plane

X-axis The value of x when y=0; where the line crosses the x-intercept

Y-axis The vertical axis on the coordinate plane

Y-intercept The value of y when x=0; where the line crosses the y-axis

Order of Operations PEMDAS Parentheses Exponents
Multiplication / Division (Left to Right) Addition / Subtraction (Left to Right)

Coefficient The number multiplied by the variable

How do you find the mean? Take the sum and divide it by the number of numbers It is the same as finding the average of your grades if all are of equal value

How do you find the median?
Put the numbers in order from least to greatest. The median is the number in the middle. If there are an even amount of numbers, take the middle two and find the mean.

Proportion Two ratios that are equal 1:2 as 2:4

Ratio The relationship between two numbers or quantities

What does < stand for?
Less than

What does > stand for?
Greater than

What does < stand for?
Less than or equal to

What does > stand for?
Greater than or equal to

What is the mode? The number or numbers that occur most often in a list of numbers

What is the range? The difference between the greatest and least (largest and smallest) numbers in a list.

Irrational Numbers The decimal DOES NOT terminate or repeat

Natural numbers Counting numbers

Rational numbers The decimal TERMINATES or has a REPEATING PATTERN

Distributive Property
A(B+C) = AB + AC Multiply the A times everything inside the parentheses

Literal Equations An equation involving two or more variables
Ex: a = b + c Solve for C

Constant A quantity that does not matter
