MODULE 3 HINARI/Partner Publishers’ Resources
Instructions - This part of the: course is a PowerPoint demonstration intended to introduce you to Partner Publishers’ Resources. module is off-line and is intended as an information resource for reference use.

Logging on to HINARI 1 Before logging onto Publishers’ resources we can Log In to the HINARI website using the URL Before logging onto Publishers’ resources, we can Login to the HINARI website using the URL

Logging on to HINARI 2 You will need to insert your HINARI User ID and password in the Log In box and click on the “Sign On” Icon We will need to insert our HINARI User ID and Password in the Login box and click on the Login button.

Logging on to HINARI 3 Proceed to the Partner publisher services ‘drop down menu’ and access the ‘Elsevier Science-Science Direct’ website. You now have left the HINARI gateway and entered Elsevier’s website. You will have access to the portal with numerous features including access to the contents of over 2,000 e-journals. Note that this ‘drop down menu’ only contains the major HINARI participating publishers. For a list of complete list of publishers and journals, go to the ‘Find journals by publisher’ list on the left side of the page. We visit Partner publisher services websites. Note how HINARI lists the ‘access status.’ This example is for a Band 1 country. Check for the ‘You are logged in’ message so that you have access to the full-text articles.

Science Direct 1 When we open a Partners publisher services resource, a new window will open. We should now be authenticated at the new site. We have chosen (Elsevier) Science Direct. When you open a publishers’ resource a new window will open. You should now be authenticated at the new site.

Science Direct 3 This is the initial page of the (Elsevier) Science Direct website. From here we can locate articles or journal titles, register for a personal profile, and order table of contents services. Welcome to the Blackwell Synergy Home page. From here you can locate articles or Journal titles, register for a personal profile, and order table of contents services.

Science Direct 4 Via Quick Search, you can be locate articles by article Title, abstract, keywords, Author or Journal/book title. The website also contains over 9,000,000 full text articles ( ).

Science Direct 5 To select a journal from Science Direct, highlight a title in the Browse by title A-Z list (in the left-hand column). To select a journal from the Blackwell collection highlight a title in the dropdown list.

Science Direct 6 We will now be on the journal homepage of The Lancet within the Science Direct website. From here, we will see a list of issues we can access by Volume/Issue. You will now be on the journal homepage within the Blackwell website. From here you will see a list of Issues you can access by date.

Science Direct 7 Within an issue, you can view an Article List and Full Abstracts plus links to Summary Plus, Full Text + Links (HTML) or a PDF format. From within a table of contents you can view other contents pages and/or sign up for FREE table of contents alerts . From within an issue you can view summaries, abstracts, references and full text. For full text articles you can view in either HTML or Adobe PDF format

Science Direct 8 Journals in Science Direct available to HINARI registered users have a GREEN box next to the title. Journals in Synergy available to HINARI registered users have a GREEN circle next to the title.

Science Direct 9 Here is an article in PDF format. When you choose this option a new window will open with the article within. When you have printed the article close the extra window. Science Direct 10 Within Science Direct, you can browse journals by broad Subject headings.

Science Direct 2 ScienceDirect allows us to search across All journals within the Elsevier collection. In this example, we will go to the Search page and enter tuberculosis in the Terms box and select All journals from the Source drop down menu. ScienceDirect allows users to search across journals within the Elsevier collection. In this example you can see the A-Z list and search box containing the search term “Tuberculosis”

Science Direct 3 These are the results for the search tuberculosis in All journals that located 5721 articles. The green box notes that, via HINARI, the articles are full-text available.

Science Direct 13 In this example we have search for the term “Bednets” within our Malaria results. This has refined the number of articles matching the search criteria. The search is now (Malaria AND bednets) in the journal Tropical Medicine and International Health In this example we have refined the Quick Search for malaria by adding the term bednets (malaria and bednets) and located 75 articles.

HighWire Press 3 This is the HighWire Press initial page. From here we can locate articles or journal titles or subject and set up an alert. The ‘journals free to developing-economies’ list is located in the by other list box.

HighWire Press 4 Within HighWire Press, you can Browse Journals alphabetically (via title). Note that some journals are a free site and others have free issues; the HINARI access is a different mix of titles.

We have accessed the table of contents page of an issue of JAMA with Abstract, Full Text (HTML) and PDF options to specific articles.
