Modernist

2 Time period From beginning of the 20th century to about 1965
The period was marked with breaks in the traditional ways of viewing the world in areas such as society, religion, and politics. War (specifically WWI) greatly influenced the writing of this time as the time period saw both World Wars. Time period also saw the end of Queen Victoria’s reign.

3 literary impact and trends
A big focus of modernism is with the inner self and consciousness Modernist writers see decay and a growing division from the individual Modernists care little for nature or being Was a break away from the Victorian culture Saw everything as being relative Concerned with the sub-conscious Rejected ideas of universal truths

4 time period’s influence
Ezra Pound contributes to poetry with his dissemination of Imagism, a movement in poetry, which derived its technique from classical Chinese and Japanese poetry. He stressed clarity, precision, and economy of language, and foregoing tradition rhyme. Invented Imagisme, played an important role in introducing modernistic sensibilities to English language poetry. Other modernist writers include F. Scott Fitzgerald, T.S. Elliot, Samuel Beckett, and James Joyce. Some modernist novels include William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying and Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway

5 fun facts During the Great War, Ezra Pound lost faith in England, blaming the war on usury and international capitalism. This lead him to leave England and move to Italy where he supported Mussolini’s fascism throughout World War Two. He was eventually approached to work on a radio show in Italy where he would criticize the Jews, belittle the Americans, and support Adolf Hitler. These actions resulted in U.S. Soldiers capturing his and sending his to jail on accounts of treason. Had his first poem published at the age of 11.

6 Fun facts (cont.) Modernists believed in Nihilism, the rejection of all religious and moral principles as the only means of obtaining social progress. By the early 20th century, so many scientific discoveries and technological advancements were being made that once one idea was accepted, it was soon questioned and discarded for something even newer.

7 The garden by ezra pound
Like a skein of loose silk blown against a wall She walks by the railing of a path in Kensington Gardens, And she is dying piece-meal of a sort of emotional anemia. And round about there is a rabble Of the filthy, sturdy, unkillable infants of the very poor. They shall inherit the earth. In her is the end of breeding. Her boredom is exquisite and excessive. She would like some one to speak to her, And is almost afraid that I will commit that indiscretion.
