2 Act One Where and when is the play set? Salem, MA; 1692
What were the girls doing before the play began? They were dancing in the forest What is the initial conflict of the play? Reverend Parris’ daughter Betty is mysteriously ill Why does Reverend Parris call Reverend Hale of Beverly? He is an expert in witchcraft; he is going to investigate Salem for witches

3 When Betty wakes, what does she reveal about Abigail?
She drank a charm (blood) to kill Goody Proctor. Why does Abigail accuse Tituba of witchcraft? To save herself; because Tituba is an easy target (different culture, language, religion, and race) What kind of person is Abigail? She is a leader; she is manipulative; she is disturbed (saw her parents’ heads smashed by Indians); she is intimidating. How do the townspeople feel about Reverend Parris? They do not like/respect/trust him. Why did Ann Putnam send her daughter Ruth to Tituba? She sent Ruth to ask Tituba to conjure Ruth’s dead sisters.

4 How many children has Ann Putman lost?
She lost 7 children right after childbirth. For whom did Abigail work? Why was she discharged? Abigail worked for the Proctor family. Abigail states that Elizabeth Proctor wanted a slave. Elizabeth knew that Abigail and Proctor had an affair. How does Giles inadvertently accuse his wife Martha of witchcraft? He asks Reverend Hale about the reading of “strange books” and his stoppage prayer.

5 Act 2 Why does Elizabeth want John to go to the court?
She want him to go and tell that the girls are frauds. Why did Mary Warren go to Salem? She is a clerk of the court. Why was Sarah Good condemned? She is condemned because she could not recite her commandments when asked. What happens to those that deny the charges against them? They hang. What happens to those that confess? They are jailed.

6 What does Mary Warren give to Goody Proctor?
She gives Elizabeth a poppet (rag doll) What does this poppet come to signify? Abigail uses it as “proof” with which to accuse Elizabeth of witchcraft. How does John and Elizabeth’s relationship change over the course of Act 2? In the beginning their relationship was cold and unfeeling; at the end it is passionate and protective. What commandment does John Proctor forget when questioned by Hale? Adultery (irony b/c that is the one he committed) What 3 women are arrested at the end of Act 2? Elizabeth Proctor, Martha Corey, and Rebecca Nurse

7 Act 3 What is the setting in the beginning of Act 3?
The setting in the beginning of Act 3 is the courtroom. What claim does Elizabeth send to the court which saves her for a period of time? She sends word that she is pregnant (and she really is!) What do John Proctor, Giles Corey, and Francis Nurse bring to the court to save their wives? They all bring signed depositions & John Proctor also brings Mary Warren. How does John Proctor characterize his wife? He says that she is an honest woman that cannot lie.

8 When questioned about John Proctor’s infidelity, what does Elizabeth say?
She states that her husband is a good man and has never turned from her (she lies to save his name) Why does Giles Corey think Thomas Putnam is accusing certain townspeople? He believes that Putnam is killing people for their land. Why do Abigail and the girls pretend to see a big yellow bird in the courtroom? They are trying to hurt Mary Warren. They ultimately “win” her back to their side. For what is Giles Corey charged? He is charged with contempt of court. Who is arrested at the end of Act 3? John Proctor is arrested (he shouts: “God is dead!” What does Reverend Hale do at the end of Act 3? He denounces (quits) the court.

9 Act 4 What is the state of Salem in the beginning of Act 4?
Complete chaos; cows wandering the streets How does Giles Corey die? He is pressed to death Why does Hale come back to Salem? He comes back to try and save the condemned. What happens to Abigail and Mercy Lewis? They steal Parris’ savings and run away to Boston. What does Parris find on his doorstep? He finds a dagger (a threat on his life) Why does Proctor confess? He wants to save his life.

10 When he confesses, what does Proctor refuse to do?
He refuses to sell-out his friends; he does not accuse anyone else of witchcraft Why will Proctor not give the judges a signed confession? He does not want to soil his name (reputation). He wants his boys to be able to walk in the world with respect. Ultimately, why does John Proctor decide to hang? He dies for his pride “Leave me my name!” Who else is hanged after the curtain falls? Martha Corey and Rebecca Nurse also get hanged at the end of the play. How does Elizabeth feel about her husband’s choice to die? She feels he “has his goodness now.” She knows that he has done what he needs to do to be at peace with himself.
