1 1 LIP SLIDE 1 Lip of cat. Objectives:
Oral Cavity - 1 Objectives: At the end of this practical you should be able to : 1. Recognise and describe a section of lip, identifying the main features and constituent tissues. 2. Recognise and describe a section of palate, distinguishing between hard and soft palate and identifying its epithelia and glands. 3. Recognise and describe a section of tongue (low power) appreciating the arrangement of the epithelium, connective tissue (with fat cells), blood vessels, nerves, glands and muscle. 4. Recognise and describe the main lingual papillae (high power). 5. Be able to distinguish and describe serous and mucous lingual glands. 1 LIP SLIDE 1 Lip of cat. View under low power and Identify: Oral surface, aboral surface, labial margin. also: Skeletal muscle, nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue. Q 1. What type of epithelium covers the aboral surface? ……………………………………………….. the oral surface? ……………………………………………….. Q 2. Identify two types of hair follicle on the aboral surface, what are they? Q 3. Identify two types of gland near the aboral surface, what are they? Q 4. What cranial nerve might be seen in this section? ………………………………………………….. Q 5. What skeletal muscle is probably within this section? ……………………………………………….. Q 6. How are these muscle fibres orientated re. the plane of section? ………………………………….. Q 7. What is this muscle’s function? ………………………………………………………………………….

2 SLIDE 2 Sagittal section head of small mouse (without mandible).
PALATE SLIDE 2 Sagittal section head of small mouse (without mandible). Due to a shortage of this slide you may need to borrow slides from neighbouring boxes. These slides differ; they were taken from two different specimens. 1. only hard palate is visible, section of head is complete rostrally, with incisor sectioned. 2. both hard and soft palate can be identified, section incomplete rostrally, some brain tissue visible. Refer to the Cd for images of both types. Identify as applicable: Brain in cranium Nasal cavity Ethmoid bone (cribiform plate) Hard palate Soft palate (if present) Skin of head Tooth (incisor) if present Q 8. Which type of epithelium covers the hard palate? ………………………………………………………. the soft palate? ………………………………………………………… the nasopharyngeal surface of the soft palate? ……………………………………………………….. Q 9. What glands are present in the soft palate? ……………………………………………………….. Q 10 What striated muscle might be sectioned in the soft palate? ………………………………………….

3 TONGUE - LINGUAL GLANDS
3 TONGUE SLIDE 3 Tongue of cat Examine the slide at low magnification. Identify: epithelium, adipose tissue, large blood vessels, large nerves, glands, striated muscle (note orientations of) frenulum. Q 11. On which surface of the tongue is the epithelium most keratinised? Q 12. Why? TONGUE - LINGUAL GLANDS SLIDE 4 - longitudinal section through body and root of tongue Two types of gland can be seen in this section – blue/purple glands and deeper red/purple glands. Identify these on the slide. Q 13. Apart from the staining characteristics what differences can you detect in morphology between these? Q 14. Which is a serous gland? Q 15. Which is the mucous gland?

4 4 PAPILLAE on TONGUE SLIDE 5, SLIDE 6, SLIDE 7 5 6 7
Examine these three slides. On each, identify the main papillae. Indicate whether GLANDS, TASTE BUDS and LYMPHATIC TISSUE can be seen associated with each. 5 6 7 Glands ……………………… ……………………… ……………………… Taste buds ……………………… ……………………… ……………………… Lymphatic tissue ……………………… ……………………… ……………………… Q Which papilla is filiform? Q Which papilla is foliate? Q Which papilla is circumvallate?
