10 GENERAL TIPS WHEN TRAINING OR TAKING THE LISTENING COMP
Where possible, READ THE QUESTION FIRST. Listen to or read the ENTIRE QUESTION before answering. DON’T RUSH. Don’t get upset by unknown words: the answer may be in the GENERAL MEANING. NOT SURE? GUESS…Better than no answer. KEEP UP with the LISTENING (Don’t go back to the question you missed, concentrate on the next one!)

11 LISTENING I. PICTURES Take a good look at the picture before you hear the 4 statements and Listen carefully to determine if the entire statement is true. Pay attention to the words that are stressed (Ex.: ‘The doctor and a nurse are talking with a patient.’) Beware of similar-sounding words (Ex.: ‘They’re walking in the garden’ or ‘They’re working in the garden’?)

12 LISTENING II. QUESTION & RESPONSE
Focus on the purpose of the question : what response answers it? Focus on the starting word (How…? Who…? When…? Where...? Etc.) Beware of words that sound alike (fare/fair ; week/weak, our/hour, etc.)

13 LISTENING III.SHORT CONVERSATIONS
If you have time, read the question(s). Identify the speakers and the conver-sation’s environment through the specific vocabulary that is used (WHO is speaking and WHERE the conversation takes place). Beware of words used in the conversation that are also used in the optional answers. TRICKY.

14 LISTENING IV. SHORT TALKS
Read the questions first. Don’t answer before the end of the talk. Memorize important details. Pay attention to the introductory mention and beginning of the talk : it identifies what kind of talk it is.

15 GENERAL TIPS WHEN TRAINING OR TAKING THE READING COMP
Get an OVERALL LOOK at the Reading Section. Read the QUESTIONS and optional ANSWERS before going any further. Then, look at the SENTENCE or PASSAGE again and start answering.

16 READING V. INCOMPLETE SENTENCES
Figure out if the question is about vocabulary or grammar. Consider the overall meaning of the sentence: this will help you determine what kind of word is missing (is it a noun, a verb, an adjective…?) Make sure the parts of the sentence fit together.

17 READING VI. PASSAGE COMPLETION
Read through the passage quickly. Figure out which terms fits best in the blank. The 4 choices may look similar : use the context to determine which one is good. Beware of the grammar form of the words : don’t choose a noun if an adjective is needed, for instance. Check that the now completed sentence makes sense!

18 READING VII. READING COMPREHENSION
Read the passage once to get a general idea (pay attention to the title and introductory sentence). Read the questions to get what info is required. Read the whole text again, more thoroughly, for detailed understanding. Answer the questions.
