1 Northern Lights Aurora Borealis
By Hanifa

2 What causes the Northern lights?
When the charged particles from the sun atoms are in Earth’s atmosphere, they cause the electrons in the atoms to move to a higher-energy state. When the electrons drop to a lower state, the release a photon. This process creates the beautiful aurora.

3 What are the Northern lights?
The bright dancing lights of the aurora are actually collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth's atmosphere. The lights are seen above the magnetic poles of the Northern and Southern hemispheres.Auroral displays appear in many different colours although pale green and pink are the most common. The lights appear in many forms from patches or scattered clouds of light to streamers, arcs, rippling curtains or shooting rays that light up the sky with an eerie glow. ma

4 Where and when are the best places to go view the Northern Lights
To see the Northern lights, you need dark skies and from early- April until late-August, the aurora may be blazing across the arctic but it is visible only to scientific equipment, as the skies are just too bright for the human’s eye to see the show. The Northern lights may be seen between 6p.m. - 6a.m. from september to march on dark clear nights. They are unpredictable, especially in the Arctic when the weather can change quickly.
