3 Objectives Analyze a work fiction and determine the symbolic meaning of objects within the story. Construct a physical project with a symbolic meaning. Homework: Vocab. Unit 4 for Wednesday LotF chapters 5-8 due Thursday

4 Dissect the sentences: label s,v,pp,participle/participle phrase
Warm Up – Dissect the sentences: label s,v,pp,participle/participle phrase I can’t understand Will’s failing grades in college. His searching glance terrified the hostages. Shouting angrily, the man ran from his house.

5 Get into your 4 person groups
Just like your passage packets, we will be discussing the LotF. Take out your books and remove everything else from your desk. In your groups, discuss each annotation objective on the next slide. Focus on the symbolic meaning present in the book. See you if can find the exposition and the rising action. Share your interpretations. Whatever you do not complete in your group must be completed at home.

6 Chapter 5: Beast from Water
Chapter Five details a meeting held to discuss several issues the boys are having, not the least of which was a ship that passed by. On page 79-80, Ralph presents three decisions from earlier meetings that the boys are not fulfilling. After highlighting each of the three points, list the three points on a post-it and stick this to the last point. The last point of the meeting is to decide about fear. On page 82, a discussion begins about fear and beasties. Annotate the main characters’ thoughts on a beast. On a post-it, quickly summarize what Ralph, Piggy, Simon, and Jack say about beasties. The meeting ends abruptly, after Jack questions Ralph’s authority and claims he will kill the beast. Annotate Ralph’s feelings regarding his leadership and annotate how Piggy and Simon feel about Ralph’s thoughts.

7 Chapter 6: Beast from Air
1. On pages , Simon joins the boys on an adventure to Castle Rock. Highlight details that con by Simon's inner thoughts as he partakes in the journey. On a post-it, use these details to examine how Golding sets Simon apart from the other individuals in the group. 2. On pages , Ralph and Jack address the potential of inhabiting the rock structure and creating a "fort". Highlight the reasons that Ralph states to prove to the others that this is a "rotten issue". In another color, highlight the reasons that Jack provides for building a fort at Castle Rock. In the margins, annotate the implications of their reasoning and what it says about each of their characters.

If you have not completed the bookwork for the story take no more than 10 minutes top complete then submit. Once you have submitted the work- complete the COAT OF ARMS question.

12 Montresor Coat of Arms In the story, the character Montresor describes his family’s coat of arms. Given Montresor’s attitude and the theme of the story, what do these symbols represent: Golden Foot Snake Blue field in the background In your notes, write how this coat of arms tells the story of “The Cask of Amontillado”. You must write 6-8 sentences for your explanation.

13 Coat of Arms Project Take a piece of white paper and draw a shield.
Draw 3 symbols that represent you and your life goals. At the bottom of the shield, write a family motto. This can be a sentence that describes you or your beliefs. On the back, List and label each of your symbols and their meaning. Make sure you write your name on the back.

14 LORD OF THE FLIES TIME Take out your LotF book and read. This is a good time to a annotate close reading objectives. Based on our lecture, annotate for symbolism in LotF.

15 closure What do you think the main characters symbolize/represent? How do they guide the allegory present in the story? (Ralph, Piggy, Jack, Simon)
