Adding Integers Chapter 2 Lesson 2B Pages 88-92

3 Learning Objectives and Vocabulary
I can add integers. Standards: 7.NS.1, 7.NS.1a, 7.NS.1b, 7.NS.1d, 7.NS.3, 7.EE Vocabulary: Opposites Additive inverse

4 Warm-up, page 88.

5 Vocabulary Integers that are the same distance from zero and on opposite sides of zero are called opposites, or additive inverses. 4 and _____ -6 and ______

6 Adding and Subtracting Integers
There are 3 ways to add and subtract integers: Use a number line Use counters Memorize integer rules

7 1 2 3 4 5 6 -1 -2 -3 -4 -5 -6 - + With a Number Line
When using a number line, you must get to ONE sign between integers. -if adding, move to the right -if subtracting, move to the left - + 1 2 3 4 5 6 -1 -2 -3 -4 -5 -6

8 Number Line When adding integers, get to one sign between integers. (sign always stays with first integer) 4 + (-2) = 4 – 2 Plus a minus = a minus / # + (-#) = # - #

9 With a Number Line 3 + 2 = 3 + (-2) = 1 2 3 4 5 6 -1 -2 -3 -4 -5 -6

10 Using Counters Place the proper number of each counters in an area and perform operation eliminate using zero pairs

11 Using Counters 3 + 2 = 3 + (-2) =

12 Adding Integers using Rules

13 Review Adding Integers
Rule #1 – Get to one sign between integers(That sign goes with the second number.) If the signs are the same, pretend the signs aren’t there. Add the numbers and then put the sign of the addends in front of your answer. Rule #2 – Get to one sign between integers. If the signs are different pretend the signs aren’t there. Subtract the smaller from the larger one and put the sign of the one further from zero in front of your answer.

14 Using Rules 3 + 2 = 3 + (-2) =

15 3 + (-5) = -4 + 7 = (+3) + (-4) = -6 + 7 = 5 + (-9) = -9 + 9 =
Solve These Problems 3 + (-5) = = (+3) + (-4) = = 5 + (-9) = =
