1 Topics How are things?  Concerns, questions, comments?

2 Topics How are things?  Questions about role in department
Concerns, questions, comments? Questions about role in department Committeees, meetings, etc.? Info on new policy coming on NTTF

3 Some Highlights of Draft Policy on “Employment of Academic General Faculty Members”
Draft of new university policy to be approved “soon”. SEAS policy to implement this to be done before May.

4 Changes Term “NTTF” replace by “General Faculty”
University-level policy, SEAS implementation of that Affects on current employees Titles for current lecturers will be evaluated Current lecturers may be asked to make a choice New policy Ranks and Titles Expectations Reappointment, Promotion

5 Professorial Rank Ranks: Assistant Prof.; Assoc. Prof.; Prof.
Title formally like this: Associate Professor, Academic General Faculty, Teaching Track (but just for university communications related to employment, probably) Normally must hold PhD in computing Unless exceptional circumstances, significant related experience, etc.

6 (Re)Appointment, Promotion
New hires: start with 3-year or three 1-year appointments After, a 3-year appointment After 6 years, an AG Asst. Prof chooses to go up for promotion or not If not, school can renew the contract School policies govern promotion decision If not promoted, can request reappointment at same rank. School decides: non-renewal, or 3-year reappointment

7 ECE for new hires? First, we’re all covered by “old” ECE policy
You can choose the new policy, though New policy: “they will be reappointed for additional three-year terms unless the faculty member’s performance falls below the high standards required by the school or the school no longer needs the disciplinary expertise for which the faculty member was hired.” Better or worse than old ECE? Not clear. But doesn’t have a “label” like ECE or tenure

8 Tracks Teaching Track: Also research track and practice track
Primarily teaching: 60-90% of effort Service to the university: % effort Next slide: scholarship, promotion Also research track and practice track

9 Promotion to Assoc. and Scholarship
“…may engage in scholarship that enhances their teaching as part of their primary responsibilities. This does not preclude them from engaging in scholarship that does not enhance their teaching, but such scholarship will not be considered for promotion on the teaching track.” Promotion to Associate Professor “…must demonstrate sustained excellence in teaching and meet or exceed the expectations of their position as defined in their appointment letter or position statement. They also must demonstrate that they have attained a local or regional reputation as a superior educator.” “Scholarship is not required for promotion unless it is specified as a requirement in the appointment letter or position statement. If required, scholarship for promotion on the teaching track must be evaluated for its contributions to the enhancement of the Academic General Faculty Member’s teaching.”

10 Lecturers Observations:
We hear that UVa wants there to be fewer with this title. The professorial ranks we just talked about mostly fits the CS department’s model of our current lecturers. In the past, appointment period, commitment, or not offering ECE was part of reason to hire at lecturer rank. New policy removes most of these reasons.

11 Lecturers Ranks: Lecturers, Sr. Lecturer; Distinguished Lecturer Role:
“their primary teaching responsibilities do not require them to hold the qualifying terminal degree, such as those whose teaching focuses primarily on technical skills (language acquisition, writing instruction, or computer software applications, for example)” “normally must hold a minimum of a master’s degree in their discipline.” Could hold PhD. Could probably teach professional masters courses in CS. Appointments: same plan as for prof ranks

12 Lecturer At initial rank, lecturer, generally not expect to perform service May be invited to serve on curriculum committees or contribute to teaching projects Next two higher ranks: expected to do service Teaching should be at least 60% of effort Promotion from Lecturer to Sr. Lecturer Like prof rank, at 6 years may choose to be considered. Renewal at Lecturer level possible. ECE kind of protection: just like for prof. ranks

13 Changing Positions Changing tracks: possible
Appointment to tenure track One can always apply to an open search, but… In rare circumstances, the chair and dean can ask the provost to waive an open search
