1 ICNIV AD ODRANOEL LEONARDO Da vinci
The Writer Ben Stutzman

2 INTRODUCTION Most of the time when we hear the name Leonardo Da Vinci, we think of his paintings. The Mona Lisa, The Last Supper, The Vitruvian Man, or Madonna of the Rocks, to name a few. Or, we think about his inventions. War machines, deep sea diving suits, flying wings, or parachutes. Did you know, though, that among all of his other talents, he was also a huge writer? This PowerPoint will describe some of the things that most people may not know about Leonardo Da Vinci’s other interest: Writing.

3 Question 1 What did he write about? What topics did he cover?
What genres did he write: Nonfiction, Fiction, Poetry, or Fantasy?

4 ANSWERS-Q1 Museum of Science .Org : Leo wrote in his journals about paintings, architecture, mechanics, and Anatomy. Wikipedia.org: He wrote about observations of daily life, art, natural philosophy, and practical purposes, like grocery lists (In his journals) Lairweb.org: He also wrote many short fables, sort of like Aesop’s fables.

5 Question 2 Why don’t we hear about his writing as much?
We always hear about his fabulous paintings and inventions, so why don’t most people know he was a writer? Did he publish any books, or did he only have drafts?

6 Answers-Q2 Museum of Science.Org: All of his writings are collected by people and museums; they aren’t really out in public. Wikipedia.org: His works weren’t published in his lifetime as books; they just stayed as journals or drafts. Lairweb.org: His writings weren’t published as books; some of his fables were passed down orally instead of physically, on paper.

7 Question 3 You might know that Leonardo Da vinci was left handed, and instead of writing from the left to right on a paper, he wrote from right to left. Even his letters were turned backwards, like in a mirror. Why did Leo write like that?

8 Answers-Q3 Museum of Science.Org: He may have written in “mirror code” to be secretive, so people wouldn’t steal his ideas. Or, so that the Roman Catholic church wouldn’t find out that he opposed some of their ideas. Lastly, he could have done it to prevent smudging, or smearing of the text. Wikipedia.org: It could have just been easier, or more natural, for him to write right to left, because he was left handed. Lairweb.org: So he wouldn’t smudge the text, to prevent stealing, and/or so that the Roman Catholic church wouldn’t find out.
