In 1890, Pope Leo XIII himself proposed to the Apostleship of Prayer a personal papal prayer intention for every month to go with the Daily Offering. From then on, the Universal Intention is entrusted to the Apostleship of Prayer.
In 1929, Pope Pius XI added a second specific missionary intention to pray for Evangelization.
In 2017, Pope Francis changed back to one intention a month.
