1 CWP: October 9-13, 2017 Special interest groups and political campaigns
Please sit in your assigned groups. I will assign roles according to seating. Be responsible and do not lose the items. I will provide your groups folders.

2 Dan Rather Reports, "The Best Congress Money Can Buy"
On the card provided. Answer the following prompt. According to the film, what role do Special Interest Groups play in Politics? Give one example from the film to show this.

3 Parties, interest groups, and public policy.
You will be working either as an interest group representative, or in a group representing a candidate from one of the two major political parties. Candidate groups will meet with interest group representatives to form alliances that will help their candidates get elected and help the interest groups call attention to their issues.

4 Phase 1: Learn about and represent a candidate or special interest group.
So that others can learn about your candidates or interest groups, you will be creating poster versions of informational Web sites with position statements or talking points covering the major issues in a fictitious presidential campaign.

5 Candidates and special interest groups
Candidate Groups: Campaign Team Roles and Candidate Profiles If there are fewer than three students in a group, eliminate the Research and Policy Director and have the Candidate and Campaign Manager share the responsibilities of the eliminated role. Special Interest Groups: Review information

6 Creating a candidate or interest group website.
Review step 1 together: share out required information for groups Review Step 2: each group write one position statement to check for understanding. Use the Poster Paper and Markers to create large web sites that are easy to read. Post your web site

7 Websites During a campaign, political candidates regularly meet with representatives from interest groups. You will now have a chance to learn about the candidates and interest groups in preparation for the meet-and-greet to follow. Candidate groups: identify and record in their notebooks interest groups whose positions or goals align with their own and with whom they would like to meet. Interest group representatives should do the same for the candidates.
