3 What is Child Abuse? According to the Child Abuse Organization Help Line child abuse is when a parent or caregiver, whether through action or failing to act, causes injury, death, emotional harm or risk of serious harm to a child. There are many forms of child maltreatment, including neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, exploitation, and emotional abuse.

5 Physical Abuse The Children Organization Help Line mentions that physical abuse may be an attempt to hurt the child, but it is not always true. Many parents say that when they hit there children it is a form of discipline. There is a difference between discipline and abuse, discipline teaches children right from wrong, not to make them live in fear.

8 Sexual Abuse Sexual abuse occurs when an adult uses a child for sexual purposes or involves a child in sexual acts. It also includes when a child who is older or more powerful uses another child for sexual gratification or excitement.

12 Emotional Abuse When a parent or caregiver harms a child’s mental and social development, or causes severe emotional harm, it is considered emotional abuse. While a single incident may be abuse, most often emotional abuse is a pattern of behavior that causes damage over time.

17 Report the abuse “Anyone can report suspected child abuse or neglect. Reporting abuse or neglect can protect a child and get help for a family it may even save a child's life. In some States, any person who suspects child abuse or neglect is required to report”-Mandatory reporters of child abuse and neglect

18 Under Texas State Law, all persons having cause to believe that a child's physical or mental health or welfare has been adversely affected by abuse or neglect have a duty to immediately report such information to Child Protective Services.
