1 Datasets Lyndon Taylor BSc FCOptom AOP Director of Finance
Vice Chairman Joint Information and IT Committee LOCSU Associate

2 Outline Where are we now? Where do we want to be? How do we get there?

3 No standardisation whatsoever IOPs
Where are we now? No standardisation whatsoever IOPs Some record as single number Some record as 19,18,20 (rather than the average!) Some record it as a text field!!!! Quote “user requests”

4 Why is this a problem? Cannot usefully share patient records Connecting with anything else within CfH is made more difficult Record Keeping is commonest theme in GOC disciplinary cases Clinical decision support very difficult without standardisation

5 Where do we want to be? For discussion this afternoon
My view is that we should work together to develop a unified National Optical Dataset Will need considerable input from profession and IT suppliers Will need trust to share current datasets and needs Could ultimately lead to “Kite Mark”? Record keeping to National Standard!

6 Where are other professions?
CfH did “Do Once and Share” projects Cataracts Glaucoma Diabetic Eye Disease Now embedded in all CfH Spine software Cataract dataset led directly to The Cataract National Dataset electronic multicentre audit of 55,567 operations Eye (2009) 23, 38–49

7 Has Optics done anything ?
Local Optical Committee Support Unit (LOCSU) Setting up “Enhanced Service” pathways across England Glaucoma Referral/Monitoring Cataract Pre and Post Op Childrens Eyecare Low Vision Services etc Developing IT systems to support these LOCSU dataset derived from DOAS ones

8 In your pack List of web addresses for DOAS reports
Some are a bit mixed up with pathways A copy of LOCSU ES dataset THIS IS A WORKING DRAFT NOT been updated since NICE Glaucoma guidelines! Welcome to look at it but please be careful what work you do based on it!!

9 Now to be controversial
Record information can be standardised fairly easily…… Images are currently pretty standard JPG, TIFF etc What about Visual Fields? What about OCTs Currently clinical care is impeded because we cant share data properly NICE require sharing of “All test results plus images”

10 Can we do anything to improve this mess?
Not trivial Equipment suppliers work on world stage not just UK Commercial issues Dicom goes a little way along this route but doesn’t improve readability Would you be prepared to look at it? Can we help facilitate such discussions

11 Thank you I hope that has given you all some food for thought
