Objective: Understand the significance of European colonization in the Mexican region and the consequences it had on the native peoples and progressive development of the Mexican cultural landscape. Essential Question: What were the causes and consequences of European colonization. What is Mesoamerica? What type of climates are found in Mexico? Name one achievement of both the Maya and Aztec civilizations. What three reasons are tourists drawn to Mexico? Which country colonized Mexico from the 1500’s till the early 1800’s. Explain the challenges that face Mexico’s economy.

21 History The earliest human artifacts found in Mexico are about 9,000 years old The most famous cultures from early Mesoamerica are the Aztec and Mayan peoples however there were many other cultures in the region Tenochtitlan (The Island City) was the capital of the Aztec Empire when the Spanish invaded Mexico in the early 16th century
