1 Autoimmune Cerebellar Ataxia Cerebellum Mrs. Ramirez

2 Cerebellum Location Cerebellum is located behind the top part of the brain stem Under the temporal and occipital lobes Where the spinal cord meets the brain, made of two hemispheres or halves

3 Functions Controlled by Cerebellum
Receives information from the sensory systems, the spinal cord, and other parts of the brain and then regulates motor movements coordinates voluntary movements such as posture, balance, coordination, and speech, resulting in smooth and balanced muscular activity Important for learning motor behaviors

5 Autoimmune Cerebellar Ataxia
Comes on rapidly and progresses quickly Can be divided into disorders that are paraneoplastic (triggered by cancer in the body) or non-paraneoplastic (non-cancer- related autoimmune disorders of the central nervous system) Non-cancer-related autoimmune disorder Body produces antibodies that destroy neurons located in the cerebellum

6 ACA - Stiff Person Syndrome
Initial stage of the disease, the patient has an exaggerated upright posture and may report back discomfort or stiffness or pain in the entire back, which is worse with tension or stress. The patient begins to move very slowly because rapid movement induces severe spasms. Depression has been noted as a comorbidity during the late stage of the disease. The patient's quality of life is affected severely at this point, making it difficult or impossible to drive, work, or have a satisfying social life.

7 Autoimmune Cerebellar Ataxia
Disabling neurological effects which can include speech, eye movement Balance unsteady walk difficulties when swallowing

8 Autoimmune Cerebellar Ataxia
Effects can include speech that is not clearly articulated gait balance disorders loss of muscle control in the limbs

9 Treatment of Autoimmune Cerebellar Ataxia
Response to immunotherapy 56 patients used a wheelchair 26 patients had walkers 7 patients used canes 25 of them required no gait aid but had an abnormal gait 4 patients had normal gait

10 Treatment of Autoimmune Cerebellar Ataxia
Stem Cell Transplants currently being done in other countries outside of the USA Stem cells removes from CSF and transplanted in affected region
