2 About me RN graduated from UBCO in June 2017
Graduated from KSS in 2011 Worked in the Nursing labs part time I wanted a career that would allow me to travel and work with people I have had practice placements on : renal units, medical units, surgical units, mental health, youth mental health, paediatrics, obstetrics and residential care, and community clinics Interest in sexual health, critical care, and ED trama

3 Why Nursing? Extremely rewarding profession
Very good job placement upon graduation-not many 4 year degrees have as good of job placement as nursing!! Hourly wage for new grads is 31.71$ (2013, BCNU) ..comes out to be aprox 26$/hour after taxes You have a union Lots of travel opportunities Endless career opportunities Medical, prescription, dental coverage!

5 Bachelors of Science in Nursing
Admission requirements for UBCO : -English 12, Bio 11+12, Chem 11+12, Pre Calc 11, One other recognized grade 12 course—these are calculated to make your average Schools that offer the BScN program: UBC, BCIT, UVic,UNBC, Douglass College, North Island College, Okanagan College (bridge program into UBCO), Thompson Rivers University,

6 How I got into nursing Average student, I had principles of math 11, bio 12, chem 11, English 12 and Francais 12 (entrance requirements were different a few years ago) I applied to Okanagan College and retook principles of math 11, Anatomy&Physiology, university english, electives (If you do courses like these beforehand, your workload is lighter once you are in the program) Applied to schools all over BC, accepted to UBCO

7 Qualities and Skills for Nursing
People person Not grossed out easily (you will be wiping people’s bums!) Have a passion for health and healing Like human anatomy/physiology Compassionate / empathetic Team player Good listener Good problem solving skills Communication skills First Aid training (standard first aid and CPR level C) Have TB testing and other vaccines

8 Drawbacks of Nursing Nursing may not be the thing for you if….
You are grossed out easily You get annoyed easily You don’t like working with a team You don’t cope with stress well Shift work doesn't’t appeal to you ( 12 hour shifts – 2 days then 2 nights )

9 Members of the Health Care Team
Care Aides – certificate program, usually work in residential care, help patients with daily personal care Licensed Practical Nurses – 2 year diploma program, work in residential and hospital settings, provide daily care to patients, give certain oral medications, preform certain procedures (catheters, dressing changes etc.) Registered Nurses – 4 year bachelors degree, work in hospital and community settings, provide daily care to patients, give oral, IM, SC, IV and transdermal medications, educate patients and family, preform all kinds of procedures (catheters, IV’s, nasogastric tubes, complex dressing changes, etc) Medical Doctors – 4 year BSc plus med school, work in many settings, prescribe medications, diagnose, Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Social worker,

10 UBCO School of Nursing 1st year : -what is normal
-certain skills : assessments, patient care, blood pressure, blood glucose monitoring, 2nd year: -disease processes, medical and surgical nursing, mental health, -more skills : NG tubes, IV meds, catheters (yay!), blood administration, 3rd year: pediatrics, obstetrics, mental health and community nursing experiences, Even more skills! IV starts, 4th year: -community and global health -you can pick what specialty you want to do your preceptorship in -opportunities to go to Africa for a 6 week practicum Upon successful completion of the program all student nurses will write the NCLEX exam.

11 Cost 5000$-7000$/year Textbooks $ /year *look on amazon.ca for less expensive text books, just make sure they are the right ones!* Scrubs – you must purchase 2 pairs of UBCO scrubs – about 80$ Stethoscope - 70$ Transportation to and from practicum, practicum starts at 7am, so you can’t rely on busses, you could be placed in Kelowna, Vernon or Penticton in years 1-3.
