1 Teacher Guide This lesson is designed to teach kids to ask a critical thinking question that you can’t just put into a search box to solve. To do that, we encourage them with smaller questions that search can help them answer. Make sure that you read the notes for each slide: they not only give you teaching tips but also provide answers and hints so you can help the kids if they are having trouble. Remember, you can always send feedback to the Bing in the Classroom team at You can learn more about the program at bing.com/classroom and follow the daily lessons on our Partners In Learning site. Want to extend today’s lesson? Consider using Skype in the Classroom to arrange for your class to chat with another class in today’s location. And if you are using Windows 8, you can also use the Bing apps to learn more about this location and topic; the Travel and News apps in particular make great teaching tools. 2 What impacts can non native species have on an environment?
© Getty Images Having this up as kids come in is a great settle down activity. You can start class by asking them for thoughts about the picture or about ideas on how they could solve the question of the day.

3 What impacts can non native species have on an environment?
Opinions on the appeal of the common myna bird vary depending on where you live. Across southeast and central Asia, the myna lives in its natural habitat and is part of Sanskrit folklore. But in Australia and South Africa, where the bird was both intentionally and accidentally introduced in the wild, the myna is an invasive species and a genuine threat to native birds. It can out-compete other birds for food, and thrives in urban and suburban habitats just as well as it does in open, wooded ranges. Mynas will even displace native birds by taking over their nests. That’s pretty successful for a critter that tops out at nine inches, beak to tail. Depending on time, you can either have students read this silently to themselves, have one of them read out loud, or read it out loud yourself.

4 What impacts can non native species have on an environment?
1 Web Search What are some examples of non-native animal species living in North America. 2 What are some examples of non-native plant species in Europe? 3 What are ways that non native species are introduced into an environment? Why were they introduced? 4 List some of the negative aspects to introducing a non native species to an environment 5 Thinking Should a non native species be eradicated? What methods might be used to restore an environment? There are a couple of ways to use this slide, depending on how much technology you have in your classroom. You can have students find answers on their own, divide them into teams to have them do all the questions competitively, or have each team find the answer to a different question and then come back together. If you’re doing teams, it is often wise to assign them roles (one person typing, one person who is in charge of sharing back the answer, etc.)

5 What impacts can non native species have on an environment?
5 Minutes You can adjust this based on how much time you want to give kids. If a group isn’t able to answer in 5 minutes, you can give them the opportunity to update at the end of class or extend time.

You can ask the students verbally or let one of them come up and insert the answer or show how they got it. This way, you also have a record that you can keep as a class and share with parents, others.

1 Web Search What are some examples of non-native animal species living in North America. Possible Search Queries: “non native species”, “glassy winged sharpshooter”, “invasive species” Sources Wikipedia: National Park Service: Wikipedia: Alaska Department of Fish and Game: Hemlock Woolly Adelgids in the great smoky mountains - It is destroying the hemlock trees in the region. The Glassy winged sharpshooter is an agricultural pest that has come up from Mexico to the United States threatening the grapes and other crops. European Green Crab damage eelgrass beds prey on things such as tubeworms, juvenile clams and juvenile crabs.

2 Web Search What are some examples of non-native plant species in Europe? Possible Search Queries: “invasive plants”, “Invasive plants Europe” Sources Wikipedia: Ailanthus altissima (Tree of heaven)[1] Amorpha fruticosa (Desert false indigo)[2] Ambrosia artemisiifolia (Amrosia artemisifolia)[3] Carpobrotus edulis (Hottentot fig)[4] Caulerpa racemosa (Grape caulerpa)[5] Caulerpa taxifolia, Mediterranean clone[6] Clematis vitalba (Old man's beard)[7] Crassula helmsii (Australian swamp stonecrop)[8] Elodea canadensis (Canadian pondweed)[9] Fallopia japonica (Japanese knotweed)[10] Gleditsia triacanthos (Honey locust) Heracleum mantegazzianum (Giant hogweed)[11] Hydrocotyle ranunculoides (Floating pennywort)[12] Impatiens glandulifera (Himalayan balsam)[13] Myriophyllum aquaticum (Parrot feather)[14] Rhododendron ponticum(pontic rhododendron)[15] Robinia pseudoacacia (Black locust)[16]

9 What impacts can non native species have on an environment?
3 Web Search What are ways that non native species are introduced into an environment? Why were they introduced? Possible Search Queries: “non native species”, “Invasive species”, Sources Alaska Department of Fish and Game: People will bring non native animal species in as pets or for food and they get out into the wild. Sometimes without natural competition these animals can take over and create an imbalance in the habitat. Ornamental plants can be brought in for decoration, but then spread into the wild. Some plants (seeds) and animals hitchhike when people are traveling. The non native species are accidentally introduced into a new environment.

10 What impacts can non native species have on an environment?
4 Web Search List some of the negative aspects to introducing a non native species to an environment Possible Search Queries: “non native species”, “invasive species” Sources Wikipedia: Non native species can crowd out native species for resources. In a new environment a species, be it plant or animal, does not have the same predators that they normally would and they may be able to populate beyond their normal constraints. Non native species will interact with the plant life and other animals differently than native species. Trampling plant species or eating plants and animals to the point of extinction.

11 What impacts can non native species have on an environment?
5 Thinking Should a non native species be eradicated? What methods might be used to restore an environment? Student answers will vary. Students will potentially take on a couple of sides. They may argue for the preservation of the non native species or provide arguments for why the invasive pests need to be handled. Students should list some challenges. Such as spraying plants to kill the glassy winged sharpshooter will also kill native species.

12 What impacts can non native species have on an environment?
This slide is a chance to summarize the information from the previous slides to build your final answer to the question.
