> Seattle Colleges students, faculty and staff > partnering with medical, educational and service-oriented organizations > to deliver global health-related volunteer service in developing countries. 2

3 GLOBAL IMPACT …why? Provide opportunities to expand our world—beyond typical study abroad locations in Europe. Service learning (volunteering with reflection) changes lives. Seattle Colleges has over 15 allied health programs on all campuses. Our partners also have many healthcare programs. Seattle has outstanding medical and educational institutions. Seattle-area professionals and community members have demonstrated interest and experience in volunteering time and expertise in the developing world. There is a great deal of need in the world today.

5 Public Health Infrastructure Development
Clinical Healthcare Medical /Dental clinics, fluoride varnish, readers/eyeglasses program model GLOBAL IMPACT Preventive Education Nutrition, oral hygiene, pre-natal care, hand washing, HIV/AIDS prevention, etc. Public Health Infrastructure Development Water filters, clean-burning stoves, sustainable agriculture, construction of latrines/kitchens/clinics, green houses, composting, etc.

Our volunteers will develop skills and grow in awareness and appreciation in the following areas: Begin to understand and appreciate cultural and socio-economic diversity Effective communication with non-native English speakers Providing services to non-western populations, including adaptation to culture and values Begin to learn to triage Embracing the value of lifelong service to the local and global community 6

Our clients will be positively “impacted” by volunteers in the following ways: Self-identified community needs are addressed Immediate diagnostics, care/services Recommendation/referrals for further treatment and assistance Preventative education, enhanced infrastructure Can report that they have been treated with respect and dignity, will gain trust in care providers/volunteers Improved ability to communicate future needs. 7

8 Discover Laos August 20 – August 31 Our work will include
We start in Luang Prabang, UNESCO World Heritage Site, and travel to a rural village where we will live in home stays. Our work will include health clinics, applying fluoride varnish treatments and dispensing eye glasses. We will also educate locals on oral hygiene and hand-washing. Our infrastructure projects will be designed to positively impact public health. Flag of the country of Laos

10 Magical Morocco Agadir and surrounding villages August 19- September 2
Rural health clinics, sustainable agriculture project, water testing, orphanages…. On the weekend, there will be an optional trip to Marrakesh! Agadir (by the sea)

Blood pressure, blood glucose and pulse oximeters (oxygenation) Applying fluoride varnish, distributing toothbrushes/toothpaste

13 Peru Quest August 19 to September 2
Medical/Dental: acute care; exams and testing, fluoride varnish, exams and extractions Education: puppetry and posters in local schools: nutrition, hand washing, and oral hygiene. Community Infrastructure Development: clean burning stoves, water filters, greenhouses OPTIONAL TRIP TO MACHU PICCHU

One of our projects: 20%-60% reduction of firewood and other fuel consumption Reduction in indoor smoke inhalation 12% increase in lung capacity after three months Higher fuel efficiency provides faster cooking times Cost-effective & efficient method of cooking helps families to work against the cycle of poverty
