1 Welcome to De Anza!

2 Agenda In-class Writing Update: I have 30/35 graded. Outlines
Homework: Begin writing your first draft.

3 Outlines Guidelines: Make sure that the essay is a personal essay. The focus should be on the writer’s experience. Make sure that the essay is not only personal. The story should be about a problem that is not just personal, but also involves social relationships. The solution should involve a change in social relationships. Check the length. There should be at least eight headings. Each heading should correspond to a paragraph. Check whether any headings need to be separated or might not have enough material. The paragraphs should be about the same length. Check whether the essay builds up to a key moment. Most of the essay should be about events near in time (a few weeks at most) to the key moment. The events should be in sequence.

4 Outlines In order to be caught up, you should have an outline before the end of class today. Exchange your outline with at least one other person. Write your name on the outline or outlines that you read. You will turn your outline in with your first draft. If you have not yet done your journal or have not received feedback see me now.

5 Homework Keep your outline, and turn it in with your first draft.
Begin writing the first draft of the personal essay. I advise you to write your introduction after you have written the body of your essay.
