2 About this Lesson This lesson is designed to teach the Common Core State Standard: Reading—Informational Text CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.3 Describe the relationship between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text, using language that pertains to time, sequence, and cause/effect. What is an animal adaptation? 2 Why do giraffes have such long necks? 3 Why do giraffes have such long legs? 4 Why do giraffes have black tongues? 5 Why do rhinos have thick skin? Students can look for the answer in the “Born to Explore” video, or conduct a separate search. (Possible queries: “define: adapt”, “what is an animal adaptation?”). From adapt. verb (used without object) 2. to adjust oneself to different conditions, environment, etc.: to adapt easily to all circumstances. And from The special characteristics that enable plants and animals to be successful in a particular environment are called adaptations.  Camouflage, as in a toad's ability to blend in with its surroundings, is a common example of an adaptation. The combination of bright orange and black on a monarch butterfly is an adaptation to warn potential predators that the butterfly is poisonous and prevent it from being eaten. These special features have evolved over long periods of time, through the process of natural selection. Adaptations afford the organism a better chance to survive in its surroundings. Students should think about how they might adapt to different environments as well; for example, their bodies might sweat when it’s hot outside. They might also choose to adapt as they move from place to place (for example, taking off coats and jackets when they come inside). © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Students can look for the answer in the “Born to Explore” video, or conduct a separate search. (Possible queries: “why do giraffes have long necks?”, “animal adaptations, giraffes, long necks”). From Their very long necks are an adaption to feeding at high levels in the treetops. Their physical adaption, a long neck, does not only help them to graze but also helps them keep track of predators and it enables visual communication with other giraffes over several miles. If the giraffe did not have a long neck it would be an easier pray for predators and it would not get as much food. © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Students can look for the answer in the “Born to Explore” video, or conduct a separate search. (Possible queries: “why do giraffes have long legs?”, “animal adaptations, giraffes, long legs”). From Towering over predators and striking out with their forefeet delivering savage blows, giraffes are well-equipped to combat danger. Their forelegs are only one-tenth longer than their hind legs, making them a formidable defence. Despite the much lengthier appearance of the forelegs, this is all the additional protection they need. © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. (Possible queries: “why do giraffes have black tongues?”, “animal adaptations, giraffes, black tongues”). From Dark colors absorb light, versus reflecting it like lighter ones do. Because giraffes are constantly sticking out their tongues to help them grab the tastiest leaves possible, the dark color helps prevent them from getting a sunburn in their mouth! Students can look for the answer in the “Born to Explore” video, or conduct a separate search. (Possible queries: “why do rhinos have thick skin?”, “animal adaptations, rhinos, thick skin”). From Rhinos have thick skin that is difficult to penetrate, protecting them from predators and thick brush in the habitat. The skin looks rough and leathery, but it is actually quite soft and sensitive. Rhinos frequently roll in mud wallows, coating themselves with mud, which protect their skin from sunburn, insects and to keep cool in hot weather. © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
