1 Adding and Subtracting Linear Expressions

2 What is a linear expression
What is a linear expression? It is an algebraic expression in which the variable is raised to the first power and different variables are not multiplied.

3 Adding Linear Expressions 1. Distribute if necessary 2
Adding Linear Expressions 1. Distribute if necessary 2. Stack linear expressions 3. Combine (add) like terms

4 Example: (2x+3) + (x+4) 2x + 3 + x + 4 3x + 7

5 Another Example: (2x-1) + (x-5) 2x - 1 + x - 5 3x - 6

6 Example with Distribution 6(x+7) + (x+3) 6x + 42 + x + 3 7x + 45

7 Marker Boards (3x + 5) + (4x  1)
Marker Boards (3x + 5) + (4x  1) (4x  10) + (5x  2)   (7x  9) + (x  6)   (6x  7) + (3x  5) (4x + 2) + (3x  1)

8 (5x  3) + (2x + 1) (7x + 4) + (5x  12) (3x + 9) + (14x  2)

9 Subtracting Linear Expressions 1
Subtracting Linear Expressions 1. Distribute the negative (subtraction sign) to all terms in the second parentheses 2. Stack linear expressions 3. Combine (add) like terms

10 Example: (2x+3) - (x-4) 2x + 3 (+) -x - 4 x - 1

11 Another Example: (2x-1) - (x-5) 2x - 1 + x - 5 3x - 6

12 Example with Distribution 6(x+7) + (x+3) 6x + 42 + x + 3 7x + 45

Marker Boards (3x + 5) - (4x  1) (4x  10) - (5x  2)   (7x  9) - (x  6)   (6x  7) - (3x  5) (4x + 2) - (3x  1)
