1 Planning & Management of Wetland Resources

2 DISCLAIMER These slides are part of a training package that includes a Trainers Manual, User Guidelines and a CD-ROM with references and presentations The production of this package was commissioned in by the Office of the Prime Minister, as part of the Northern Uganda Agriculture Livelihoods Recovery Programme (ALREP) The training package was produced by consultants of the Makerere University College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences The contents of the package do not necessary reflect the views and opinions of the Government of Uganda and the European Union

3 Objectives of the session
At the end of our discussion we should be able to: Explain the value of wetland resources to the livelihoods of our communities Identify threats to wetland resources that may be associated with resettlement Chart out deliberate ways of mitigating threats to wetland resources that may be associated with resettlement

4 REFLECTION List activities in our areas that may undermine wetlands goods & services. How do they impact wetlands? How would you rank the effect? what are the possible mitigation measures?

5 Resettlement and wetlands
Resettlement may impact on wetlands in different ways. Impacts may be: On site Off site

6 On-site impacts on wetlands
Construction Residential Houses Industries Markets Parking yards Drainage Water removal by creating drainage channels Diversion of water and preventing it from entering a wetland Damming of upstream water sources

7 On-site impacts on wetlands (2)
Encroachment, i.e. taking over part of a wetland for a specific purpose Usually the natural state of the wetland is altered and degraded scale of encroachment determines the overall impact on a wetland the impact will be less if the patches of encroachment are not continuous A compromise could be to have large non-converted areas between converted areas

8 On-site impacts on wetlands (3)
Preventing inflow of water, or on-site water removal In-filling with municipal/industrial solid wastes landfill with soil and rocks for industrial and residential development Planting trees or other plants with high water demand to lower the water table e.g. eucalyptus

9 Off-site impacts on wetlands
Activities that affect the quality of water flowing into wetlands Sewage disposal from urban centres Industrial effluent Agricultural effluent run-off from intensive live stock rearing and abattoirs, hide & skin factories, coffee and sugar factories Inflow of waste Mining Soil erosion

10 Reflection and discussion: what are serious threats to wetlands in our area, and what can we do about them? Activity Severity (Rank) Impact Mitigation Measures Draining wetland Severe Etc.
