3 IT is transforming to meet the needs of the digital business
Business imperatives Drive growth and new revenue Move with speed and scale Reduce the cost of taking risks IT is being asked to help set the business apart in a global, digital, and mobile world. A set of business imperatives is driving new opportunities for IT. Although these imperatives are not new, the digital revolution has heightened their speed and necessity. Everything must be faster and more transparent. [BUILD 1] First, in the current macro environment, our customers say that driving new revenue and growth is priority #1. For IT, this means that their opportunity is to focus on driving transformation initiatives that advance the goals of the business. In fact, the business expects it. To do this, IT is shifting from simply maintaining IT and keeping the lights on to focusing on more strategic activities that can help the business drive growth. [BUILD 2] Second, businesses are changing the speed at which they deliver products and services. They are focused on moving with greater speed and scale to capture new revenue opportunities. For our IT customers, time is critical: time to market of a new product; time to value against a business goal; time to insight with faster access to data that the business can act on. IT is being asked to pull every lever that it can to SPEED innovation and respond faster to the business, all while using fewer resources, both budget and people. [BUILD 3] Third, every business is navigating a rapid pace of change. Change is the new normal. Amid this change, the risk of doing nothing or of not taking a risk can often be much more expensive and detrimental to the business. Our customers are shifting from balancing cost and risk to reducing the cost of taking risks. For IT, the cloud gives them a platform for supporting new ideas and opportunities in ways that they never could before. The cloud has emerged as a way to more effectively meet rapidly changing business needs. Every IT organization is trying to determine how it can move quickly and confidently to a future in which the cloud is core to the organization’s strategy. 4 The next wave – flash going mainstream
Performance Low Performance and Capacity High Cheap and deep Number of applications Performance at any cost First-generation AFAs Virtualization Engineering Home directories Database Public/private cloud, IaaS Next-generation AFAs Flash is almost the same cost as SAS and is exceeding HDD capacity Situation: Flash has historically been deployed for performance workloads. The market for this is important but small: The next generation of flash makes it economically feasible to support the less performance-sensitive apps that are the bulk of data center applications on flash. This includes virtualization, engineering workloads, home directories, tier 2 databases, infrastructure as a service (IaaS). These workloads have always been a strength of NetApp. It’s where our unified capabilities have the most value. Archival workloads can still be put cost-effectively on disk, but we see that left bar rapidly moving to the left. Takeaway: The market is going to explode; it is in a NetApp sweet spot; we are perfectly positioned for it. Gartner: “Select SSAs for all primary applications and workloads, but do not restrict their usage for other applications.” © 2016 NetApp, Inc. All rights reserved. NETAPP CONFIDENTIAL

9 New applications on flash
AFF—what’s new Increased performance 7M IOPS—fastest unified AFA 2x the IOPS at half the latency for Oracle database First to support both 40GbE and 32Gb FC connectivity Better economics First to support multi-stream-write (MSW) SSDs—42% increase in usable capacity combined with ADP Inline data compaction 15TB SSD supported on all models Simplified management Software encryption—NetApp® Volume Encryption Massively scalable NAS container—NetApp ONTAP® FlexGroups Greater serviceability AFF A700 High-End Expandable AFF A300 Midrange Notes for the MSW SSD point: 1. The new 960GB SSDs we released in August are MSW SSDs, which has 20% more capacity than the 800GB SSDs as the benefit of MSW. 2. ADP 2 is a new capability we rolled out in ONTAP 9 release, which further increases the usable capacity for nearly 20% for single shelf configurations. For half shelf configurations, the increase is around 50%. 3. Combined the two technologies, we are able to offer 42% better usable capacity for single-shelf or half-shelf configurations. For other configurations, the benefit will be less. New applications on flash © 2016 NetApp, Inc. All rights reserved NDA - NETAPP CONFIDENTIAL --- 9

11 The impact of flash innovation
1PB of storage <1ms latency performance to all data 11 times smaller footprint 11 times lower power consumption No tuning for performance 6-month payback 10K high-performance HDDs 2+ racks 1 1 PB in 2U shelf, using 15TB SSDs NetApp® AFF Flash radically changes data center economics Setup: As flash evolves, the impact on the data center is huge. Often, when a transformation technology is adopted, you can see the impact in the data center. You could see that with virtualization as the server footprint shrank as IT consolidated. You will see that with flash to an even greater degree. It radically changes data center economics Let’s compare 1PB of both HDD and the new 15TB drives (384TB with 4:1 efficiencies). The differences are stark. Let’s start with the footprint. Multiple racks are reduced to a 2U shelf and a controller. The power usage drops by 11 times, from 88MWH/yr to 8MWH/yr (data based on AFF8080 EX) (MWH/yr = megawatt hours per year). Takeaway: The impact is broader than price. It is going to change the look, design, and cost structure of data centers. Radically change the economics of your data center © 2016 NetApp, Inc. All rights reserved. © 2015 NetApp, Inc. 13 Inline data compaction—new in NetApp ONTAP 9
NetApp continues to innovate beyond compression and deduplication Places multiple logical data blocks from the same volume into a single 4KB block on storage Occurs after inline adaptive compression and inline deduplication, before writing to media Benefits Additional space savings for highly compressible data Space savings for very small I/Os and files (≤2KB) and for larger I/Os that have extensive “white space” Provides 2 to 4 times the space savings that are achieved from inline compression alone for database workloads—as high as 67:1 as a combined savings from compression and compaction © 2016 NetApp, Inc. 16 Performance behind AFF: FlashEssentials
NetApp® ONTAP® software is optimized for flash Flash-specific read-path optimizations provide consistently low latency Parallel threading of I/O lets you handle more requests at once Coalesced writes to free blocks maximize performance and flash media longevity Built-in storage efficiencies lower the cost of flash Data reduction technologies enable up to 584 times the space savings* Inline data compaction—continued innovation beyond compression and deduplication—further increases storage efficiency Advanced SSD partitioning in combination with MSW SSDs further increases usable or effective capacity Software-defined access to flash maximizes flexibility Data fabric ready with live workload migration between flash and HDD, on premises or to the cloud Quality-of-service safeguards SLOs in multiworkload and multitenant environments The FAS hardware architecture is designed for performance: I/O-optimized hardware moves data more quickly. Larger memory stores enable faster response times. Storage controllers handle routine SSD tasks, eliminating overhead. The operating software is optimized for efficiency: Parallel threading of I/O can handle more requests at once. In-memory write coalescing limits SSD wear, providing: Excellent write performance to storage—writes are acknowledged to the hosts or client when data in memory buffers is backed by NVRAM. Lower write amplification. More efficient garbage collection. By reading ahead, it pulls data into memory for the fastest access. Read latencies are low, assisted by prefetch and read-ahead algorithms. Inline compression minimizes wear on flash. Additional information about writes: NVRAM: Writes to the SSDs are not in the critical path. Writes are logged in the NVRAM in both nodes of the HA pair and are acknowledged to the client immediately. The NVRAM is battery backed up, which means that there is no data loss in the event of a power loss. Writes are coalesced in memory before being destaged to SSD. The NetApp WAFL file system is very flexible in choosing the location for a new or modified write. Traditional file systems read the existing block, write it somewhere else, and overwrite the new block. WAFL simply writes the new block—data is written to free pages on flash media. NetApp ONTAP writes to free blocks. WAFL blocks (random or sequential) are written to disk into free areas of contiguous space, which allows any write to be sent to disk sequentially. *Depending on use cases and workloads © 2016 NetApp, Inc. 36 NetApp FlashAdvantage: storage efficiency guarantee 4:1
Reduce your required usable storage capacity by at least 4:1 with NetApp® all-flash storage— guaranteed Any workload on NetApp All Flash FAS for both primary and secondary data Includes inline efficiencies, NetApp Snapshot® copies, and clones Best practices guide will be provided NetApp will make up any shortfall 25TB Quoted 25TB 100TB Total effective (primary + backup) 100TB 4:1 total storage efficiency Selling effective capacity with capacity guarantee Situation: AFA competitors today have fully embraced selling effective capacity to instantly integrate storage efficiencies in their pitch. Pure, HP, and EMC do it as well as our SolidFire team. Here at NetApp, we have been more conservative. Because of many variables on efficiencies, we tend to present “usable.” This approach has created situations in which a competitor quotes “effective” and we quote “usable” at the same capacity.  We are introducing a 4:1 capacity guarantee I mentioned earlier that with a 3:1 efficiency, SSD can be made less expensive than disk. We are introducing a 4:1 guarantee to help make the case that flash is less expensive. When a customer has 100TB of data, the customer would like a storage system that is sized to store that amount (excluding, for the moment, headroom). The 100TB includes both the primary data and our best practice for Snapshot copies and clones. If for some reason we don’t meet this guarantee, the customer will receive additional capacity to make up the shortfall. © 2016 NetApp, Inc. All rights reserved.
