What is a Nontraditional student?

The national center for education statistics (NCES) has identified seven characteristics that are common to nontraditional students. To be considered a nontraditional undergraduate, you; - Do not immediately continue your education after you graduate from high school - Attend college only part time - Work full time (35 hours or more per week) - Are financially independent - Have children or dependents other than your spouse - Are a single parent - Have a GED, not a high school diploma

Total SIUE Undergraduate Population = 11,022 Nontraditional Students = 1,719 approximately 15.5% Fraternity & Sorority Members = 938 approximately 8.5 % International Students = 407 approximately 3.7 %

Common misconceptions

Nontraditional students are thought to be primarily older adults and/or parents. However, many nontraditional students are young people who took a few years before going to college. Often times, those few years are long enough to provide a bit of a contrast in age difference and mentality.
