1 MTT Case Study Grading Response for I. Cabrera and A. Canales
G. Salas & H. Luna EDTC Dr. Linda Newell November 26, 2011

2 MTT case study Classroom context: This case study focuses on a fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Lulas, who is preparing a science lesson on animal adaptations. The class consists of 20 students; 1 student is learning disabled and 2 students are 504.

3 MTT Case Study Background: Mrs. Lulas has presented this lesson to her fifth graders for the last few years, but this year she would like to take advantage of the school’s available technology to teach the topic to all her students more effectively, including the students with diverse needs. She plans to have students work in 5 small groups of 4 students. Each small group will be assigned an animal. The groups will research the adaptations of the assigned animal. They will then prepare a presentation and demonstration, then present it to the class. Mrs. Lulas’ goal is to increase students’ awareness of animal adaptations.  Mrs. Lulas would like the Master Technology Teacher (MTT), Mrs. Tech,  to suggest ways for her students to work collaboratively on the research, while presenting information successfully to all their classmates. When making her recommendations, Mrs. Tech must consider that there is a learning disabled student and two 504 students in the classroom. Appropriate drivers, plug-ins, interfaces, Web browsers and operating software for available hardware are already currently installed on all classroom computers. A computer lab with Internet accessibility and networked printers  are available. Also, 30 wireless notebook computers with Internet access are available for checkout.

4 Additional Available Technology
Hardware: 1 networked scanners*Mimio*Mobi*1 digital video camera*Document camera*12 microphone headsets*Portable audience response system for 30 students*Projection device*Smartboard Software: Video editing*Web page authoring*Presentation*Database*concept mapping*Spreadsheet*Word Processing*Optical character recognition*Graphics/photo editing*DVD/CD writing software*digital storytelling software*Audio editing software*Web 2.0 technology

5 Task 1: Identify three technologies from the additional available technology list that would be appropriate for enhancing this lesson while addressing the diverse needs of all students. Explain why the technologies you identified are appropriate. Score: 3 Rationale for grade:  Students accurately identified three available technologies, but only provided a partial justification for incorporation of these technologies into the lesson. The students fail to address the direct usage of the Smartboard or computer lab. In addition, Spicynodes Web 2.0 technology is inaccurately identified as Spicy Nodes.

6 Task 2: Describe how you would support and guide Mrs
Task 2:  Describe how you would support and guide Mrs. Lulas in planning the lesson then evaluating student performance. Explain how your support and guidance would assist Mrs. Lulas in achieving the goals of the lesson for all 22 students in the class. Score: 2 Rationale for grade: Response provides some of the appropriate support and guidance, but does not include the diverse needs of the students. Inaccuracies present in both the sample rubric, as well as, the name of the software, Spicynodes.

7 Task 3: Describe how you would support and guide Mrs
Task 3:  Describe how you would support and guide Mrs. Lulas in implementing the integration of technology into the lesson. Score: 1 Rationale for Grade: This response describes the MTT performing the lesson, instead of providing the necessary support and guidance so that the teacher can implement the technology into the lesson. In this response the teacher’s ability to utilize technology in the classroom is hindered due to the MTT providing the lesson to the class.

8 Task 4: Describe how you would support and guide Mrs
Task 4: Describe how you would support and guide Mrs. Lulas in evaluating the applications of technology in order to meet the goals of the lesson. Score: 2 Rationale for Grade: Response demonstrates a partial understanding of how to mentor and provide feedback for the teacher in the evaluation of her lesson, which was conducted by the MTT. Minor inaccuracies evident, Spicynodes continues to be referred to incorrectly and the rubric previously discussed (task 2) is not mentioned as a form of evaluation.

9 Task 5: Describe how a technology you identified might be used to enhance a lesson of your choosing in Reading or Math. Score: 3 Rationale: Response reflects a technology used in the lesson and provides an acceptable justification, however, it is incomplete. Students comment on Spicynodes enhancing the lesson through the uses of additional activities, but do not provide a thorough justification for these activities.  In addition, inaccuracies continue to be present in regards to the name of the suggested technology. can you see this?
