2. Clash of Cultures
Introduction: Americans claimed that Texas was part of the Louisiana Purchase.
The Old 300
The purpose of the 1830 decree was to stop all immigration from the US into Mexico. Mexicans were encouraged to settle in Texas.
Austin demanded that Mexico remove the ban on immigration and also make Texas an separate state.

3. The Struggle for Independence
Introduction
Texans consider the battle in the town of Gonzales to be the first fight for Texas independence.
Texans won an important victory in 1835 when they liberated San Antonio from Mexican control.
The Battle of the Alamo
The Battle of the Alamo occurred on March 6,1836.
General Santa Anna led the Mexican forces; Colonel Travis led the Texans.
The defenders of the Alamo had given Sam Houston’s army enough time to prepare to fight Santa Anna.

4. The Struggle for Independence
Texas Declares Its Independence
On March 2,1836, Texas declares independence.
The Goliad Massacre was when Mexican General Santa Anna ordered the execution of captured American troops outside Goliad.

5. The Lone Star Republic
Sam Houston was elected the president of Texas in 1836.
Texas officially became a state on December 29,1845.
