Colonoscopy: A test that allows doctors to view the inside of the colon
June 1969: Dr. William Wolff and Dr. Hiromi Shinya
Many sceptics claimed it was too dangerous to undergo
Became more widespread as a result of successful surgical application

3. When and How it’s used
Patient may be given sedatives before a colonoscopy
A thin tube called a colonoscope is inserted through the anus
A small camera is attached to the end of the tube
Can be used to view the colon and the lower part of the small intestine
Doctor will inflate colon using CO2 gas
Biopsy may be performed
doctors may ask you to draw your knees up to your chest to get a better angle of the colon
Biopsy: a sample of tissue taken to further examine any potential abnormalities
sedative: a tranquilizer that reduces irritability or excitement in an area (slurred speech and slow reflexes)
