1 Laboratory Equipment and Safety

2 Beaker Used to measure large quantities of liquids
Read at eye level and at the bottom of the meniscus

3 What is a meniscus? The line formed by a liquid in glassware
The wider the glassware the thinner the meniscus Read liquid levels from the bottom of the meniscus

4 Graduated Cylinder Used to measure small quantities of liquids
Used when quantities need to be precise Read at eye level and at the bottom of the meniscus

5 Volumetric Flask Used when reactants must be measured extremely precisely Add solid reactant first then fill to the line with liquid reactant Read at eye level and at the bottom of the meniscus

6 Erlenmeyer Flask Used for carrying out experiment
Never used for measuring liquids Never fill more than half way

7 Test Tube/Test Tube Rack
Used to conduct an experiment using small quantities of reactants Are to remain in the test tube rack during experimentation

8 Triple Beam Balance Used to mass solid reactants
Must be tarred prior to use Always use weigh paper; never place reactants directly on the plate

9 Hot Plate Used to heat liquids
Never fill glassware more than half way when heating If a solid needs to be heated… Heat water in a large beaker Place the solid in a test tube Place the test tube in the large beaker

10 Microscope Used to look at very small objects

11 Laboratory Attire All students must wear:
Goggles Apron Gloves All long hair or loose clothing must be secured prior to the start of lab

12 Safety Equipment Emergency shower Eye wash station First aid cabinet
Used if chemicals get on large portions of your skin or clothing Eye wash station Used if chemicals get into your eyes Hold eyes open in stream of water until otherwise instructed by the teacher or nurse First aid cabinet Contains basic first aid supplies for minor injuries

13 Safety Equipment (cont’d)
Fire extinguisher Used to put out fires on objects, not people To use: Pull the pin Aim nozzle at the base of the fire Squeeze the handle

14 Important Notes Always inform a teacher of an injury or accident immediately Allow the teachers to perform any necessary first aid In the event of an emergency, follow all directions the first time they are given
