1 Prospects of Renewable Energy in Jordan
Eilat-Eilot International Renewable Energy Conference 2011 22-24 February 2001 Dr. Aiman Alshare German Jordanian University

2 Renewable Energy Drivers
Economical Aspects Science and Technology Clean environment

3 Current Energy Consumption Snapshot

4 Renewable Energy Resources

5 Energy Mix Domestic resources 3-4% 15 % of GNB (8 Mtoe)
Renewable Energy is 5% CO2 emission is 3.2 ton/capita Energy consumption 1.6 toe/capita

6 RENEWABLE ENERGY OPTIONS
Utility Scale Concentrating solar thermal power Solar fuels Photovoltaics Wind Biomass Distributed Heating/cooling Hot water

7 RENEWABLE ENERGY OPTIONS
WIND ENERGY Wind Atlas by Danish RISO institute & JMD, MEMR, NERC Danish Tellus, German Co. 20 ktoe Opportunities Partnership Wind Turbines industry Completion of Wind Data

8 RENEWABLE ENERGY OPTIONS
PHOTOVOLOTICS 5-7 kW h/m2/day PV in remote area small scale 400 MW h/year (32 ktoe) Opportunities Partnership to upscale usage RTI PV SOLAR THERMAL

9 RENEWABLE ENERGY OPTIONS
BIOMASS Constrained vegetation Biogas Opportunities Family fermentation units 100 ktoe

10 Over 100 million m2 collectors worldwide
World-wide Deployment China 65 % Europe 17 % Japan 3 % ROW 7 % Israel 8 % Germany, Greece and Austria are the three largest markets in Europe, with a combined installed solar thermal area of 9.6 million m2. Austria (8 million people) has an installed solar thermal capacity of 1.5 GWth, equal to that of the installed solar thermal capacity in the US ( nearly 300 million). Over 100 million m2 collectors worldwide

11 State of the Art: Solar Thermal Electricity (Concentrating Solar Power)
624 heliostats; each 120 m2 Tower height: 100 m Rankine-cycle Converstion = 21% peak and 16% avg. Cost (incl. power block): 35 M€ 11 MW-e/ 55 MW-th (Sevilla, Spain)

12 Cooling of Photovoltaic Panels to Improve Efficiency- Model and Experimental Study
Tareq Abu Hamed The Dead Sea and Arava Science Center Aiman Alshare German Jordanian University

13 May 1889 It worries me a lot when I think that I have done so many pictures and drawings without ever selling one. Vincent van Gogh 15 Sunflowers $40 M
