2 HOUSING AND RELIGION –Jodi

3 Housing - these northwest coast people lived among longhouses or ' otherwise known as “big houses” made with cedar plank. Each one of these longhouse was about feet long and feet wide, and included more than one family. Red cedars were extravagantly important to these citizens because they could make large houses with them. It was cut with stone axes, and was floated to their villages. When building long houses frames were built first out of cedar logs. Then, cedar planks were attached, making sure it properly overlapped the logs to keep out rain. They used wooden pegs as nails to hold the wood together. It was created as huge as rectangles, with many posts to hold up the roof and was covered with cedar planks. l also have their own small fire pit for cooking. Cedar woven mats were hung from the ceiling to separate the different family areas. Religion - In the North West Coast their culture, customs and beliefs were passed down through three different ways stories, songs, and dances. Those stories explained why certain things occurred, for example, the changes in season. There were also stories about each group and how they first appeared in this world. The people of the Northwest always felt like they were surrounded by supernatural beings interfering with the natural world. In their culture, spirits were connected to all living things.The only link between the spirit world and the natural world was the 'Shamans' or 'Medicine Men'.

5 Social structure - The Northwest Coast people carried out a democracy
Social structure - The Northwest Coast people carried out a democracy. Instead, it was ruled by money and wealth. In this case the wealthiest clan had the most power. Their society included different classes: nobles, commoners, and slaves. The Northwest Coast groups were divided into basic social units. In these family groups, the oldest and highest ranking individual was named the Chief of the family. Then within each family, a person's rank was determined by their relationship with the Chief. Now a chief had many responsibilities, Chiefs were responsible for dividing wealth amongst the people. Those who had a higher social status received more, all the way down to the lowest ranked individual. All of the groups of Northwest Coast people are split into two or more family ‘clans’. These Clan memberships were always claimed through the mother's side of the family. A person always married outside of their own clan and Membership was proclaimed through different symbols like crests, totem poles and etc. Roles - Men were responsible for all the hunting and fishing. Men also did all the building and carving. While women stayed near the home, doing work on land. The women were responsible for all of the chores related to keeping the home: they cleaned, cooked, and looked after the children. The Women also dug for clams and shellfish, and collected berries from nearby forests.

7 Technology – The northwest coast people had so many tools that they could access since they had many variates of materials to build upon. Some of these tools were used for an amount of reasons such as building and hunting. For example: sledgehammers were used as a cutting access for wood and smashing stones. As well as bows, arrows, snares, deadfalls and harpoons were all used for hunting for food and animals. All these tools were pro founded and had a job in the northwest coast. Survival - They lived lives connected to the land and the maintained a life of activeness, they ran in tune with the seasons. These human beings were knowledgeable and continually practice some of the same skills they stumbled upon for thousands of years. Their deep and intimate knowing of the local ecology and skill to creatively make living in the Pacific Northwest coast region possible. The usefulness of certain natural resources was a common element amongst many northwest coast Native Peoples. Materials were scouted such as western red cedar, salmon, deer, elk, huckleberry and etc. It was the incredible intelligence to know of the local ecology, and containing that knowledge allowed many different tribes to thrive along the northwest coast.

8 LOCATION AND ENVIROMENT- SKYLER

9 Location- The Haida's main territory is Haida Gwaii use to be known as queen charlotte island which is located in northern BC, but a different group of Haida live in Southeast Alaska on Prince of Wales Island Tsimshian Aboriginals are located at terrace and prince Rupert BC and southern Alaska. The Tlingit territory was located from Portland Canal along the border between Alaska and BC southeast from the Copper River delta in Alaska Nootka live on Vancouver Island from Cape Cook in the north to Sheringham Point in the south and across the Strait of Juan de Fuca at Cape Flattery (Washington Bellingham) Nisga'a are located north of Vancouver there main towns are New Aiyansh, Canyon City, Greenville, and Kingcolith. Coast Salish territories claimed by coast Salish people spans from the northern part of the gulf of Georgia on the inside of Vancouver island and most of southern Vancouver island, and all of Lower Mainland most of Puget Sound and Olympic Peninsula.    Environment The First Peoples of the area lived in a narrow section of coastal land stretching from Washington State to Northern B.C and into Alaska. Temperatures were moderate, which allowed them to fish all year long The environment of the Northwest Coast of Canada was very diverse, rugged coastline by the pacific ocean, wide and narrow beaches, deep fjords, mountains near the coast, a lot of islands, spruce cedar and fir forests inland rivers and lakes. Which are many of the environments. All the people lived near the water, either the Pacific Ocean or an inland river or lake, and relied heavily on water for their survival because they would need to catch salmon.

10 FOOD, CLOTHING AND ART- SKYLER

11 Clothing Northwest coast Aboriginal groups clothing were made out of either from trees or animal hides from animals they hunted they used every part of the animal they used bones for drums or tools and animal skin for traditional items like drums or shakers teepees which were houses for us Intestines were used to weave drums. None of the animals were killed for sport always was a purpose of killing a animal then leaving an offering behind such as your tool u killed them with or sweet grass which is used to cleanse people or a traditional Pow wow item. Art-Artwork was usually carved or painted of animals most known artwork of the Native people is totem poles the big totem poles you see in Stanley park like those and each totem pole tells a story which the most important part of the totem being the bottom part that start of a new story and the top being the end if a totem pole falls it stays on the ground it's not meant to stand just like a canoe if a canoe sinks if u put it in water it is meant to sink everything that happens has a meaning. Other artwork is of animals which is black and red usually. Language- Languages of the northwest coast is Halkomelem, the language is almost dead with only a few hundred people speaking the language fluently. Not even on google translate. Food Salmon was the most important food to the northwest coast people which there was a lot of it in the rivers you could see the salmon swimming around they were that abundant they also had access to the pacific ocean which they would collect clams and shellfish, they ate mostly meat but the also eat berries that the women would collect from plants around there village.
