2. William penn starts his colony
Born in England on October 24, 1644
Went to school until he was 12, then had private tutors
His family had a lot of money, and were close to the King
Attended Oxford University
During his time at university he joined the Society of Friends

3. The Quakers Another name for the Society of Friends
A Protestant religious group that believes all people are equal
They had very different beliefs
All people are equal whether they were rich or poor
War and fighting are wrong
All people should be free to choose their own religion

4. William Penn was kicked out of Oxford when they found out he was becoming a Quaker
He joined the when he was 23
He was sent to jail 6 times for his beliefs
His father, the admiral in the King’s navy, was not happy with his son
The King owed Admiral Penn money – so when he died in 1670 he needed to repay William the loan

5. An idea
Penn wanted a place where people of all religion could live and practice their beliefs WITHOUT fear of being thrown in jail
He did not like the way people were being treated
He thought about this for 10 years
When the King could not repay the money, William instead asked the King for land in North America
This made him one the largest landowners in the world!!!!

6. Penn + Sylvania = Pennsylvania, meaning Penn’s woods
Our Name
Penn wanted to name the land “SYLVANIA” which means woods because almost of the land was covered with forests
The King wanted to name it in honor of Admiral Penn
Penn + Sylvania = Pennsylvania, meaning Penn’s woods

7. A new colony is born
1681 – William Penn began to plan how the new colony of Pennsylvania (PA) would be organized for over a year
This plan was called the Holy Experiment
He planned to give certain “freedoms” to the people that settles here
Freedom of Religion
Wanted all people to be treated as equals
Wanted people to have a voice in how the government was to operate
He sent a small group to the colony that year
1682 – William Penn arrived in PA with 100 Quakers on a small ship named Welcome
It took 2 months to cross the Atlantic Ocean and 30 people died during the trip

8. Learning to survive
Survive- to live through something that is hard to do
The new settlers had to first survive the dangerous trip then had to learn how to survive in this new land once they arrived
There was only 20 homes built, so many lived in dug out caves along the Delaware River
NO road
NO stores
NO shopping centers
They had a fresh water supply, plenty of wood, many animals and fish
The Delaware Tribe were living in the area and helped teacher the settlers how to survive off of the land

9. William Penn worked closely with the NAs
He made peace treaties (agreements)
He joined in their sports and activities
He paid the Chief, Tamanend, for the land the King of England had given him
Treated them as EQUALS!

10. Important laws Penn passed TWO important laws
The Great Law – stated that all people were born equal. Allowed people to worship any religion without punishment
The Frame of Government – the allowed people to set up a General Assembly(a group of people chosen by the people to make laws)

11. Back in England thousands of Quakers were put in jail
William Penn was worried so he returned to England in 1684 and stayed for 15 years
While he was gone people back in the colony could not agree
1699 – William Penn returned to PA and fixed the problems
1701 – he passed another set of laws called the Charter of Privileges which allowed the colony to SUGGEST laws to England

12. 1701 – William went back to England again to solve problems but died there before he could return again to PA
He died in 1718
The colony was ruled by his family until the War of Independence in 1775
William Penn helped model the government we have today!

13. Colony is a success
It was such a great success because it was a safer place for people to live
A place of PROMISE and HOPE
People were ready for the freedom Penn offered

14. Ethnic and religious groups in PA
Ethnic – a religious, racial, or national group
Immigrant – people who move from their country to another

15. The Pennsylvania Dutch
First settled in the LANCASTER AREA and are still there today
NO longer exist in Europe
More than 70,000 Amish in the United States and Canada
The oldest and 2nd largest group is in PA
All live in good farming places

17. Amish DO not have a “church”
Every 2nd week they hold a church service in someone’s home
Barn raising – get together and spend the day building a new barn for a famer
Shunning- no one in the community will pay attention to the rule breaker
