8 Chronology of Key Events for Ph.D. Students
Admission as a doctoral student Candidacy examination Admission as a doctoral candidate Developing a doctoral program of study Residency Two consecutive 9-cr. semesters (not summer) Appointment of your doctoral committee Comprehensive examination Preparing for the comprehensive examination The nature of “Comps” Dissertation proposal approval Oral dissertation defense Submission of final copy of Ph.D. thesis

9 Residency Two consecutive semesters: (Spring, Fall) or (Fall, Spring)
Summer does not count toward residency. Semesters count if they end after candidacy exam has been passed. Minimum 9 cr. each semester (“full-time”) Courses cannot be taken at any campus other than UP, Harrisburg, or Hershey Medical Center (PSU’s doctoral level campuses). Cannot use C I 601 (registration as a dissertator) No full-time employment off campus during residency A candidate for the Ph.D. degree at a particular campus of the University may not count the work of any semester toward the residence requirement for this degree while engaged in full-time employment off campus or at a different campus of the University.
