1 ATF/TTF Instrumentation Nov. 27, 2006 Last report: Oct. 2
Juan Cruz, Justin May, Doug McCormick, Steve Molloy, Janice Nelson, Tonee Smith, John Wray (SLAC) Peter Prieto (FNAL)

2 Project Overview ATF RingBPM ATF2 Magnet Movers ATF2 Cavity BPMs
TTF HOM BPM NanoBPM Nov. 27, 2006

3 ATF RingBPM Project Motivation: Toward this goal, three trips in FY07
From A. Wolski: ILC GDE RDB S3: Damping Rings R&D Coordination, VERY HIGH PRIORITY R&D OBJECTIVE Demonstrate < 2 pm vertical emittance To achieve this: Instrumentation and Control Improve BPM resolution Beam Dynamics and Low Emittance Tuning Toward this goal, three trips in FY07 Feb. ‘07 - test FNAL Echotek system June ‘07 (?) - Expand BPM system, start emittance tuning Later - More low emittance tuning Nov. 27, 2006

4 ATF RingBPM Echotek RingBPM upgrade From last talk:
Preliminary upgrade of BPM analog hardware for 20 bpms Partial success with SPEAR Echotek system Demonstrated significant improvement in BPM resolution (order xs) Machine studies incomplete Insert correct number/ units Nov. 27, 2006

5 ATF RingBPM Project Interest in Ring BPM upgrade increasing
Fermi lab commitment increasing: 7 people and system for running four Echotek modules (8 BPMs) Manfred Wendt, Charlie Briegel, Sharon Lackey, Dennis Nicklaus, Peter Prieto, Ron Rechenmacher, Duane Voy Success during this trip will pave the way for more FNAL Echotek support. Perhaps 30 modules for May/June trip In that case we must provide approximately 40 more BPMs worth of electronics and low level RF support Nov. 27, 2006

6 Hardware (FNAL) Instrument 8 ATF Button BPM’s using graychip-based (Echotek) DDC Boards A timing board that locks to 714MHz ring clock and generates MHz LO for downmix boxes. It generates DDC triggers, synchs to 2.16Mz ATF turn marker MVME 5500 processor running under VXWORKS 6.1 2 Linux boxes with their own hub Nov. 27, 2006

7 Software (FNAL) VXWORKS 6.1 operating system with EPICS IOC to control DDC boards and present records for channel access ATF Control System is already programmed to read BPM values from CA Engineering Page running under LabView in a LINUX box to serve as diagnostics and debugging tool This provides an essential debugging facility that was lacking in Feb. ‘06 Nov. 27, 2006

8 Calibration Run with existing calibration setup on 3 BPMs
Measure performance of analog hardware with beam Test SLAC-designed calibration hardware: Nov. 27, 2006

9 Goals for Feb. ‘07 Demonstrate system stability
Hopefully leave 8 BPMs with upgraded electronics and readout in ATF control system Measure noise improvement from grounding work Test Calibration System Perform limited BBA (on 8 BPMs) and beam studies to confirm system performance Nov. 27, 2006

10 ATF2 Nov. 27, 2006

11 ATF2 Mover progress 10 crates (20 movers) arrived at KEK
4 radioactive movers shipping today Movers will require about 2 more small crates to complete shipment Four mover setup should ship to France by Dec. 1 Nov. 27, 2006

12 ATF2 Magnet movers Installation:
Install magnet movers with magnets on pedestals (E Cubed) Install electronics in racks (SLAC) Install and label all cables. Connect to chassis. (SLAC/E Cubed) Terminate tunnel end of cables with SLAC supplied connectors. (SLAC) Set movers to midrange. Zero pots and LVDTs. (SLAC) Check out the motion of the movers using local PC camac control or PC base LabView stepper motor control if required. (SLAC) Check out control system software for coordinated motion X, Y, Roll. Use dial gauges to check for correct motion. ( SLAC or E Cubed) Set movers back to mid range and perform magnet alignment (E Cubed) Movers ready for beam Nov. 27, 2006

13 ATF2 Magnet Movers SLAC to provide all electronics to operate movers
Movers require space for 17 chassis taking a total of 55 rack units plus one CAMAC crate with 15 empty slots Optimum layout will require three racks loaded something like this Magnet mover chassis m a g o v r Magnet mover chassis 15 slots required for camac crate: 2 magnet mover modules 2 ADC modules 11 LVDT modules Magnet mover chassis Magnet mover chassis Magnet mover chassis Camac crate Magnet mover chassis Resistor chassis Dc power supply Resistor chassis Resistor chassis Dc power supply Resistor chassis Resistor chassis Resistor chassis Resistor chassis Resistor chassis Resistor chassis Nov. 27, 2006

14 ATF2 mover installation manpower requirements
Effort required to complete installation during 2 week trip in FY08 (4 people minimum) Install electronics in racks 1/2 day Install 162 mover and LVDT cables and label. 2 people 3 1/2 days Terminate tunnel end of cables 2 people for 3 1/2 days Check out mover motion and LVDT read back. 2 people 2 days Check out coordinated motion using ATF control software and dial gauges. Two groups of 2 people 3 days Nov. 27, 2006

15 QBPM Downmix Electronics
95% delivered or ready for shipping Current installation estimate is 4 people (FY08) for ~3 weeks Development of first-pulse operation scheme Nov. 27, 2006

16 Nov. 27, 2006

17 Goals for Dec. trip (11/29 - 12/20)
ATF2 Meetings: Determine physical location of racks, penetrations, cable plants, etc. Discuss installation of quad/BPM test setup Run ATF2 electronics on BINP “NanoBPM” setup First pass at running calibration system on a Pohang BPM Contribute to NanoBPM run Incorporate NanoGrid data into resolution measurements Evaluate long-term stability of system resolution Install quad Mover/BPM test setup electronics and cable plant Nov. 27, 2006

18 TTF ongoing work Trip in Jan. ‘07
Run Narrowband system as single bunch BPM Integrate system with DOOCS Develop simple, fast calibration scheme Extend BPM running to multi-bunch operation Evaluate narrowband system as phase monitor Wideband HOM mapping of cavity Nov. 27, 2006

19 Summary ATF RingBPM ATF2 Movers ATF2 QBPMs NanoBPM (Dec. ‘06) TTF HOM
Exciting plans for installation of new FNAL Echotek system in Feb. ATF2 Movers Hardware in transit ATF2 QBPMs Hardware soon to be in transit Setup work in Dec. ‘06 NanoBPM (Dec. ‘06) Long term stability tests nanoGrid integration TTF HOM Lots of measurements in Jan. ’07 Nov. 27, 2006
