Syntax is sentence structure

3. What effects might it have on literature?
Tone: It can influence the voice of the narrator or speaker to help create his or her attitude
Mood: It can influence the feeling of the audience as you are reading
Character: It can influence the description of a character by defining how they think, act, or talk.
Setting: In can influence the feeling, or mood, of the setting and create an atmosphere for the plot.

4. How would syntax analysis look?
Example: “You know I hate, detest, and can't bear a lie, not because I am straighter than the rest of us, but simply because it appals me. There is a taint of death, a flavour of mortality in lies - which is exactly what I hate and detest in the world - what I want to forget” (Conrad 34).
Look at the structure of this passage’s 2 sentences. What is unique or what stands out?

6. How would you write this analysis?
Conrad’s use of a list of emotions, “hate”, “detest”, and “can’t bear” show how absolutely negatively he feels towards lies. He wants to emphasize this with the use of synonyms that repeat this emotion, creating a forceful and insistent tone. This same emotion is revisited, and set apart by dashes, in the second sentence, making sure that the narrator’s point has been made clear in that it stands alone.

Revisiting Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher”, write out a paragraph that analyzes the sentence structure you examined last week.
