Key Question: What makes our culture what it is, and should that shape the decisions we make about the future?

2 Questions which arose:
Who are refugees and why did they leave their homes? Where do they come from? What do they want? What kind of people are the refugees? How can we find out more about the families? Whose job is it to look after refugees? Why don’t some people like them? What are they eating? Why do they want to come to the UK?

3 Our starting point: Why do refugees want to come to the UK?
CLASS DISCUSSION Do ALL refugees want to come to the UK? What makes Britain appealing to all kinds of visitors?

4 What makes Britain? Landmarks Crumpets and jam Kindness of the people Freedom The Queen Our welcome Religious freedom The right to vote Arts and music Expression

5 What makes a person British?
Their understanding nature Living here Working in Britain Having British parents Having a home here Someone who feels at home here The feeling of belonging to Britain wherever they are in the world.

6 To whom does Britain belong?
Everyone who lives here. People who work here. The Queen God Everyone who wants it to The people of the world. It’s just a concept People who already live here.

7 Our first decision ‘So we can know what to do in the future we really need to know about Britain today, and to do that we should look at what has happened to make Britain how it is today. We need to look at history.’ E age 10 ‘Our culture is lots of bricks like in a wall. We should look at how the country was built to see how to keep it strong in the future.’ B age 10

We looked carefully at the structures which surround us. We asked whether we all see things the same way.

14 What are they thinking? Now that the decision has been made, what are their emotions like? What would you pack? Can you take home with you? Put yourselves in their shoes.

15 Task: To build the entire narrative including dialogue.
What is left unsaid? Are some things too difficult to say?
