5 Funding Summary by Research Performer

6 Real-Time Grid Reliability Management
Lay groundwork for transition of the electric power grid from passive response to active anticipation and mitigation of disturbances Develop and demonstrate operational decision support tools for system operators and security coordinators Research and develop measurement and controls for advanced detection of and automatic responses to potential problems to ensure system reliability

7 Reliability and Markets
Science-based contributions to the understanding of the impact and role of market forces in ensuring system reliability Develop and demonstrate enabling technologies and techniques for price-responsive load Develop tools to assist participants and policymakers better understand and improve the design and operation of markets Analyze the reliability-related impacts of market operations

8 Distributed Energy Resources Integration
System integration tools and techniques to permit reliability-enhancing operation of large numbers of small (< 1 MW) distributed energy resources in the distribution system “Microgrid” operation and control System reliability impacts and coordination Focus on integration issues beyond current scope of IEEE P 1547

9 CERTS Contributions to Summer 2001 Electricity Reliability
Demonstration of Reliability Management tools at North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) for ACE Compliance Monitoring and AIE Compliance Monitoring Demonstration of Reliability Management tools at CAISO for VAR Management; Post-Disturbance Analysis using Phasor Measurements Demonstrations of Load as a Reliability Resource through projects funded by CEC under AB 970 and CAISO for development of load participation programs Evaluation of Micro-grids through field tests at UC Irvine Analysis of market design features of NE-ISO, PJM, and CAISO Technical support for WSCC performance tests and model validation
