13 colonies until 1775 Revolutionary War : Colonists won war and 13 Colonies became USA (13 states) Boundary: Atlantic to Miss. River (except Florida) Northwest Ordinance: 60,000 people to apply for statehood

4 Louisiana Purchase 1803: President Jefferson wanted to buy New Orleans and western Florida from France France wanted to sell all of their land (Miss. River to Rocky Mtns.) $15 million

14 Gadsden Purchase Small chunk of land in Southern California and Arizona Bought from Mexico for a railroad in 1853 $10 million
