1 America’s Acquisition of Texas
From Independence to Annexation

2 Mexico and Texas 1. 1820’s Mexico allowed Americans
to settle in Texas (which was part of Mexico) 2. By 1830, nearly 20,000 Americans had settled in Texas

3 These Americans were not
loyal to Mexico, and most didn’t even speak Spanish

4 4. Fearing that these Americans wanted to make Texas part of
America, Mexico forbade any new American settlers to the region 5. Americans rebelled, with the support of Tejanos (Mexicans living in Texas)

5 Texan Independence

6 The ALAMO 1. Texans declared independence from Mexico and declared
themselves a new country, The Republic of Texas 1836 Texans defended against an attack by the Mexican army in an old Spanish mission called... The ALAMO

7 3. Despite being poorly prepared and outnumbered, the Texans
survived a 12 day siege and fought bravely 190 Texans vs 6000 Mexicans When the fighting ended, 183 Texans and 1500 Mexicans had been killed!!

8 4. They lost , but their determination forced Mexico to worry... 5. Texans fought the Mexicans again that spring where they defeated the Mexican army

9 They were finally INDEPENDENT!

10 Texas Annexation

11 an annexation treaty with the US
1. In 1845 Sam Houston signed an annexation treaty with the US 2. However, the US Senate didn’t approve it at first… (they liked the buffer zone between the US and Mexico) 3. Houston threatened to sign an annexation treaty with ENGLAND, so we finally agreed to annex Texas in 1845
