4 Health and safety procedures
All business have a legal duty to provide a safe and hygienic environment. Legal responsibilities – if you harm or put a client at risk – you are legally responsible, liable to prosecution and fined. There is a huge amount of legislation that relates to Health and Safety. 5 Sometimes called the Umbrella Act –
Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 Covers all aspects of Health, Safety and Welfare at work. (‘As far as reasonably practicable’) This Act is very important and should be incorporated into every aspect of a business. 8 Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002
The purpose of this regulation is for employers to identify substances in the workplace and assess the possible risk to health. Substances that seem harmless May be hazardous if stored Incorrectly. 10 Hazardous substances must be identified during a risk assessment.
COSHH Assessment Hazardous substances must be identified during a risk assessment. e.g. surgical spirit, nail products. COSHH assessments must be regularly reviewed and updated when necessary. e.g. new products. 11 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at Work Regulations 1992.
This act requires all employers to provide appropriate protective clothing and equipment for all employees. All PPE should be ‘CE’ marked – indicating compliance with Personal Protective at Work Regulations and satisfies safety requirements. Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 This applies in all jobs where manual lifting occurs. Employers must carry out risk assessment where manual lifting is involved. RIDDOR Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR) 1999 It is the law that certain diseases or infection must be reported. Also reported – if an employee or client/visitor suffers: Death, major injury, more than 24hrs in hospital, incapacity to work for more than 3 calendar days.
