Troops presence in Saudi Arabia Policy towards Iraq U.S. support for Israel

3 3 reasons why religious scholars say it is incorrect to blame Islam for violence and intolerance:
Its just a religion, and all religions are interpreted differently by different people over different times. Much evidence exists of peaceful coexistence of Muslims and other religions. Islam is related and derived from salaam, which means, ”peace”.

4 What is 1 of al Qaeda’s greatest strengths today?
It’s ability to inspire other terrorist radicals and groups, (al Qaeda means, “the base”) Terrorist groups in Yemen, Somalia, and Pakistan are a few examples.

5 2 reasons why the USA has been targeted by terrorists?
Because the USA is the most powerful country in the world. Because the USA is the most influential country in the world. Ex of power: troops and presence in the Middle East Ex of influence: “Americanization” (U.S. cultural values)

6 How does the U.S. deal with the threat of terrorism?
M.I.Q.: HOW DO YOU RATIONALLY DEAL WITH THE IRRATIONAL? Terrorism is the single most difficult threat to deal with for the USA now. It almost seems as if the USA tries to hard, they will anger and provoke terrorists, but on the other hand, if the USA does not do anything, we will never know when threats may arise or where they might exist. So what to do?

7 Options in brief: Lead an assault on terrorism
Collaborate to fight terrorism Defend the homeland Address the root causes of terrorism Read each description. Rank all 4 options based on your opinion on the best to worst. Be prepared to support your decisions.

9 Post 9/11 Terrorist policies
1. Policies abroad (overseas)- mainly based on force. 2. Domestic policies (in the U.S.A.)-mainly based on tightening security

10 1. U.S. Policies Abroad: 2001, war in Afghanistan, to eliminate bin Laden, Al Qaeda, and Taliban (still on going). 2003, war in Iraq, to target terrorism and possible W.M.Ds. (ended in 2011) Turn to pages 20-22, identify 6 more details about why the U.S. got involved in both Afghanistan and Iraq. (3 for each place)

11 Give 2 reasons why conventional military methods may not be as effective at fighting terror:
1. because there are small groups of terrorists scattered around the globe (ISIS), therefore conventional war aims won’t work. 2. technological advancements have made attacking terrorists more effective and cheaper (both in human cost and $$ cost).

12 How has the U.N. addressed Terrorism?
Box on pg 21… Nov 2004, The U.N. Passed Resolution 1540, which calls on all member states to take specific steps to prevent terrorists from acquiring W.M.Ds. It also forces states to fully enforce all other arms control agreements. (like the N.P.T.)

13 In addition to war and conventional force, what other programs and measures have been used by the U.S.A. to fight Terrorism? Extraordinary Rendition Secret Prisons Drone Attacks Targeted Assasinations.

Patriot Act- legislation that promoted a increase in surveillance and allowed government officials to conduct secret searches without warrants. Done in the name of combating terrorism Examples include wiretapping and access to personal mail and phone records. Highly criticized as a violation of the 4th amendment. Compromises individual privacy at the expense of national security.

19 Patriot Act continued…
Led to more aggressive action towards detainees and an increasing in profiling. Some argued it also led to an increase in RACIAL profiling. The Obama administrations eased up on some of the Patriot Act’s aggressiveness but kept certain aspects that enabled the government to still seek terrorist threats in individuals.
