Nigella sativa as an anti-inflammatory and promising remyelinating agent in the cortex and hippocampus of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis-induced rats Prepared By: Heba Mohamed Fahmy, PhD Lecturer at Biophysics Department, Faculty of Science, Cairo University, Egypt

2 Introduction and aim of the study
What is multiple sclerosis (MS)? What is experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE)? What is Nigella sativa (N. sativa)? The aim of the present study was to investigate the protective and therapeutic effects of the whole N. sativa seeds (2.8 gm / kg of animal weight) in the EAE-induced rats.

3 Animals were randomly divided into 4 groups
Materials and Methods Animals were randomly divided into 4 groups “Control” group “EAE” group “EAE + N. sativa” group “N. sativa + EAE” group Open field test Daily clinical scoring Body weight Disease monitoring Histopathological examination Ultrastructural examination Oxidative stress parameters

4 Nigella sativa suppresses inflammation in the EAE-induced groups

8 Conclusions The whole N. sativa seeds attenuate the clinical signs, suppress inflammation and lead to marked remyelination in EAE-induced Wistar rat. N. sativa seeds could provide a promising agent effective in both the protection and treatment of EAE even when the treatment started after the appearance of first clinical signs.
