Site Monitoring Requirements
Document 149A describes the daily monitoring procedure for all GBO stations. Procedure verifies science collection and system parameters—the overall health of all stations. Appendix contains corrective procedures for detectable out of bounds conditions. Three main categories: “Monitor” Magnetometer Imager
3
“Monitor” Computer (disk, CPU, users, memory, software versions) Temperatures (inside imager, hut, computer, mag) Power system (voltages, UPS) Network (bandwidth, latency) Quantitative—RT website can automatically categorize values as acceptable or out of range.
4
Magnetometer Packet Headers (automatically categorized) 1-day Plots (stack plot visual: gaps, flat lines) 1-month Plots (stack plot visual: slow drifts, sudden offsets)
5
Magnetometer Magnetometer plots for visual inspection
6
Imager Age/Statistics (automatically categorized) Low-res images (visual montage: black, snow, jaggy cutoffs) Low-res keograms (stack plot visual: gaps, horizontal lines)
7

Summary The daily monitoring procedure ensures ongoing operation of GBO stations. Current Status: RT website exists Monitoring procedure documented No dedicated personnel trained to perform this task yet

Ground Based Observatories (GBO) Computer Configuration Control

Overview GBO station software looks like: Base Linux Installation
Vanilla Redhat 9 GBO-specific packages Under Subversion Control Site-specific configuration IP, Hostname, Magnetometer calibration How are they assembled?
12
Assembly Process Base Linux Installation is cloned from master HD image

GBO-specific software pulled from Subversion repository

14
Assembly Process Site-specific settings are applied to the software using “site-select” utility. Sets IP to:
15
Monitoring and Upgrading
All software package version numbers are reported to the RT website for monitoring Daily monitoring procedure includes checking versions RT website has “good versions” specified Updating software on each station is done as needed using a Subversion and Makefile process
16
Subversion Subversion is a software version control tool similar to CVS.
17
GBO Wiki The GBO Wiki captures incidents and site configuration information. Pending Items Site Quirks Visit/Log entries and reports Also documents common GBO tasks such as initializing hard drive, DNS maintenance, etc.

Summary A procedure exists for: Reproducing fully configured GBO stations Tracking deployed software versions Updating software on deployed stations GBO-specific software is maintained in the subversion repository. The wiki captures GBO related knowledge.
