To Open the Data Set into SPSS
Open SPSS
In the Data Editor, Select Open then Select Data
 you get the Open Data window
In the Open Data window
specify the File Type as Excel
indicate the directory on your laptop where the customer.xls file is located
hit OK
You get an Opening Excel Data Source window  hit OK
Wait for SPSS to get the data
Adjust the width of the columns “GENDER” and “STATE”

To Get the Quartiles using SPSS
We will do it for the frequency variable PURCH
In the Data Editor, Select Transform then Rank Cases
 you get the Rank Cases window
In the Rank Cases window
Select the PURCH variable in the top left panel
Click on the top arrow to transfer it to the top right panel
In the bottom left panel, select whether to assign Rank 1 to the largest or to the smallest value
Hit the Rank Types button on the upper right  hit OK
Select NTiles and enter 5
Deselect all the other options and hit CONTINUE
Then hit OK
You obtain a new column in SPSS called NPURCH which contains the quartile index for PURCH
