3 Occupations and Careers Handbook for UAE Nationals
From a range of national activity indicators, twelve (12) industry sectors were identified. About 20,000 UAE nationals enter the job market every year (Emirates National Development Programme (ENDP). The Handbook acts as an important reference for employment opportunities in the key sectors. The sectors were derived from information related to such activities as economic, social context, employment, and population size as well as synergies in the mix of occupational and vocational skills.

4 Agriculture in the emirate of Abu Dhabi
Agriculture is of key importance in the achievement of food security and represents a central economic activity in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. The emirate of Abu Dhabi has made vast strides in the field of agriculture, setting a worldwide example in overcoming the dry conditions of the desert and converting its arid terrain into green farms producing a variety of vegetables and fruits for the consumer market. Abu Dhabi’s extensive coastline supplies a significant part of the local market demand for fish, which is the basic food for the inhabitants of coastal areas. Fisheries are one of the important renewable economic resources and an essential source of national income. 12 Recent developments in agriculture, livestock and fishery in the UAE
International Centre for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) in Dubai The UAE imports around 80% of its food needs. An international, non-profit agricultural research centre established in 1999 in Dubai Originally focused on the problems of salinity and using saline water for irrigated agriculture Has evolved into a world-class modern research facility with a team of international scientists Conducts applied research to improve agricultural productivity and sustainability in marginal and saline environments Created a prototype greenhouse of the future, called New Generation Greenhouse, that could triple crop yields of fruits and vegetables in the UAE while using 90% less water and 50% less energy than traditional greenhouse designs Created a second greenhouse prototype, called Net House, that is simpler in design and uses a green net covering to partially block the sun as well as a misting sprinkler system that helps cool the interior of the greenhouse while using half as much water as normal greenhouses do and saving 97% of energy Agricultural Innovation Centre in Al Dhaid, Sharjah Established in 2014 in the Al Dhaid area of Sharjah Aims to promote latest agricultural advancements and maintain the agricultural sector’s sustainability in the UAE through state-of-the-art technological innovations, research works, and relevant consultations Coordinates with top-notch international centres specialising in agricultural technologies through the execution of joint scientific research and partnership programmes and schemes to develop the country’s agricultural system
